Spitz (OTS) February 27, 2024. When the buds of around 100,000 apricot trees open, the world cultural heritage site shines in a delicate pink. In order to experience this natural spectacle in a particularly stress-free manner, the Wachau communities have put together an incentive for gentle mobility for visitors. On the two weekends in March, travel on public buses within the region is free.

Anyone interested can find out where the apricot trees can be admired when they are blooming on the website www.marillenbluete.at or in the folder “Wachauer Apricot Blossom”. This is available for free collection in the Wachau communities and information points or can be downloaded online. In addition to information about the individual apricot-growing communities, the hot-off-the-press folder and website also provide details about the bus service including stops.

By bus to the apricot blossom

If you want to completely indulge in the experience of the apricot blossom, you should leave the car at home and opt for a climate-friendly alternative. The Wachau World Heritage communities are offering public bus travel on the 16th and 17th. and 23-24. March for free. The Wachau line 715 north of the Danube and 720 south of the Danube run at regular intervals between Krems and Melk – both cities that are easily accessible by train – and stop in all major towns in the Wachau. This means you always have the opportunity to stop and take a walk through the blooming apricot gardens. In addition to the main lines in the Wachau, lines 718 Mühldorf and Spitzer Graben, as well as line 446 Angern near Krems, are included in the mobility offer.

For a slower journey through the blooming Wachau, you can also take a ride on the Wachaubahn. For holders of the NÖ-Card, travel is free one day a year. If you want to combine the train journey with your bike, you can take it with you or easily borrow a nextbike and explore the region on the Danube cycle path. In the Wachau you are particularly flexible thanks to the many nextbike rental stations, as the bike can be returned or borrowed in all communities.

By boat to the apricot blossom

Experience the fascinating natural spectacle of the apricot blossom from the water? The DDSG offers on the two weekends 16th-17th. and 23-24. In March you have the opportunity to explore the Wachau by boat from Krems. We set off in the morning towards Spitz at the regular timetable. If you return to Krems after a walk through the vineyards, you can do so either by boat or with one of the free public buses. To get you in the mood for the apricot blossom, the DDSG spoils guests with their own apricot menu if desired. Walk to the apricot blossom

The apricot blossom is particularly impressive on a hike in one of the largest apricot-growing communities, Rossatz-Arnsdorf. The Apricot Mile, consisting of seven stages from St. Johann im Mauertale to Rossatzbach and leads through magnificent apricot gardens. If you would like to find out more about the work in the apricot garden or the tree blossoms, the Aufreiter family’s apricot adventure trail in Krems-Angern is the right place for you.
