The march of right-wing extremist identitarians must be a warning for all democrats and anti-fascists
Vienna (OTS) – Today, Saturday, another march by the Identitarian Movement is taking place in Vienna. Right-wing extremist and neo-Nazi groups from other countries such as Switzerland and Germany also marched. As was the case last year, today the FPÖ was once again in the thick of things rather than just there.
“What the Identitarians and the FPÖ have propagated on the streets of Vienna today cannot be taken seriously enough. Because behind their slogans there is a political agenda that reminds us of the darkest chapter of our history. They want nothing other than the end of our pluralistic democratic society and instead a closed, authoritarian society sorted according to ethnic criteria,” says Eva Blimlinger, memorial policy spokeswoman for the Greens, adding: “The right-wing extremist FPÖ and the right-wing extremist identitarians are a danger to democracy and life in freedom as we know it. “It is all the more important not only to raise your voice against this policy of inhumanity, but also to take a decisive stand against right-wing extremism.”
“As in the previous year, numerous FPÖ officials appeared at the demonstration. The Identitarians, who are rightly under surveillance by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, have now de facto developed into a front-line organization for the FPÖ. In terms of personnel, rhetoric and ideology, there’s no longer a place between them,” says Blimlinger and emphasizes: “Ideologies that are based on anti-Semitism and racism are not opinions. They always lead to discrimination and violence. That’s why it’s our duty as democrats and anti-fascists to stand up against it every day and everywhere. Today in Vienna and tomorrow wherever it is necessary.”
