Hermann Friedrich Talowski, section chairman for trade and crafts in the Styrian Chamber of Commerce and representative of the ÖVP business association, is causing outrage with his latest proposal: sick leave after leisure accidents should be compensated for by vacation days.

Talowski explained in an interview:“An employee gets injured while playing football at the weekend and is on sick leave for a month – it has nothing to do with the company. It would be appropriate to use vacation days for this because the entrepreneur pays 100% for the entire month. The employee doesn’t lose any money, just vacation entitlement.”

René Schachner, deputy chairman of the Federal Trade and Crafts Division of the Freedom Economy, firmly rejects this suggestion:
“With such statements, Talowski from the ÖVP Economic Association shows how little he thinks of fair and trusting interaction between employers and employees. This way of thinking divides rather than unites. Employees would have to fear that in the event of a leisure accident they would not only suffer health-related but also financial disadvantages. This is neither contemporary nor does it promote work ethic.”
