ÖVP Vienna state party chairman City Councilor Karl Mahrer would like to thank everyone who made it possible for New Year’s Eve in Vienna to be largely peaceful: “The police did an excellent job with strict checks in advance, good planning and a strong presence in the city. Big thanks also go to the Vienna fire department, the rescue workers and the hospital staff, who mastered the challenges very well!”
What is shocking for Mahrer, however, is that the fire brigade was massively hindered during an operation: “Barricades against emergency and emergency services – that shouldn’t exist in Vienna. For far too long, SPÖ city governments with the Greens and Neos looked the other way. We as the Vienna People’s Party are committed to everyone who maintains law, order and security in our city!”
For Mahrer, this also includes the City of Vienna’s Office for Emergency Measures: “The confiscation of tons of illegal pyrotechnics shows how important courageous action is! “Especially when hundreds of thousands of people want to celebrate peacefully, there must be no tolerance for those who do not adhere to our rules of the game,” concluded Mahrer.
