The EU translation competition “Juvenes Translatores” gets young language talents from all over Europe in front of the curtain every year. In Austria, a student of the BG9 Wasagasse decided this year’s 18th round of competition: Lea Grethe the jury was able to convince German with its particularly liquid translation from Slovak. The young translator is at home in both languages and transferred the text about digital citizenship and idibled into German.
Christian Wigand, acting head of the representation of the European Commission in Austria, said: “I congratulate Lea and her school very warmly. Languages open doors – professionally and privately. Multilingualism helps to better understand other cultures and perspectives and take advantage of opportunities abroad. The EU’s motto is: in diversity. Language talents like Lea meet this motto with life. “
Lea Grethe prevailed against 75 language enthusiasts from 20 Austrian schools; Throughout the EU, over 3000 17-year-old students started. 552 possible language combinations were available – 144 were used in this round across the EU. Austria once again convinced with a special variety of languages: the participants translated into German and English from 12 different EU languages, but also to Italian, Polish, Bulgarian, Hungarian and Slovenian.
As a prize, the 27 first places receive a multiple trip to Brussels: At the beginning of April it goes to the EU capital, where the award ceremony and visits to the EU institutions and the translation service of the EU Commission are on the program.
Six young talents just missed 1 for Austria: Hanna Szendröi, also from the BG9 Wasagasse, Julia Kiraly from BHAK/BHAS Hollabrunn, Gabriel Folie from BG/BRG Perchtoldsdorf, Paula Papak from BG/BRG Seebacher, Stefanie Steiner from the Bundesgymnasium Tamsweg and Aylin From the Schillerstrasse high school in Feldkirch. You will receive an award for your very good performance.

The “Juvenes Translatores” competition (Latin for “Young Translators”) has been organized every year by the general directorate of the European Commission since 2007. The competition promotes the learning of foreign languages in schools and gives young people an impression of what it means to be a translator.
Multilingualism and thus the translation have had a permanent place in the EU since the establishment of the communities. The language regulation was the subject of the very first regulation from 1958 (Regulation (EEC) No. 1 of the Council). Since then, the number of official languages has increased with the EU extensions from 4 to 24.
