A banner reading #UnbornLivesMatter was recently placed at St. Charles Church. Behind this seemingly moral message lies an attack on the freedom to make decisions about one’s own life. Restricting access to abortion does not only mean an interference with health, but also a deliberate deterioration in the living conditions of many people in precarious situations.
Abortion is part of health care and should always be accessible according to the needs of those affected. They make it possible to determine one’s own life, regardless of economic or social constraints. Anyone who refuses or makes abortion difficult forces people to shape their future under conditions that they cannot choose for themselves.
The banner on the Karlskirche represents a dangerous attempt to hand over the power to make decisions about our bodies and our lives to those who already benefit from privileged circumstances. It is unacceptable that pregnant people are prevented from acting on their own needs and life plans. Especially in view of tomorrow’s international “Safe Abortion Day”, the banner on the Karlskirche is a pure provocation.
The Christian fundamentalist “March for the Family,” which the banner calls for, will take place on October 5th. This event is a meeting point for anti-feminists and right-wing extremists to whom we must not leave the streets. That’s why it’s important to join the counter-protests. An anonymous activist from the left-wing alliance “March for the Ass” says: “We clearly oppose this regressive ideology. Clerical-fascist forces that want to restrict the self-determination of pregnant people must not be given a platform.”
We demand the immediate removal of the banner and call on society to take a clear stand against this form of paternalism and control. Our lives, our decisions, our future!
