Badner Bahn: Passenger numbers reached a new record high in 2023

Over 15.8 million passengers, far exceeding pre-pandemic record levels

Vienna (OTS) 2023 brought the Badner Bahn a new record with over 15.8 million passengers. Never before have so many passengers traveled on the Badner Bahn. The previous best was 13.4 million passengers in 2019. Due to the pandemic, passenger volumes fell significantly in 2020. Since then it has gradually recovered and has now reached a new record level. Compared to 2022, 26 percent more passengers used the Badner Bahn last year.

“The Badner Bahn is the best example of how targeted investments can be used to create incentives for people to switch from cars to environmentally friendly public transport. Increased frequency at the end of 2020, a massively modernized fleet for a year, more trains in use and recently also night traffic on weekends. In recent years we have invested heavily in expanding our offering and increasing quality. With the improved offer, we were able to attract many commuters to the Badner Bahn and relieve congestion on Vienna’s roads,” said Vienna’s public transport city councilor Peter Hanke.

“The positive passenger numbers underline a generally valid approach: with sensible, efficient investments based on clear planning principles, we are strengthening exactly the offer that people rightly expect. With the additional connection in the morning introduced in December 2023 and the new night services on weekends, the Badner Bahn has become significantly more attractive. These improvements are not yet fully factored into the current figures,” says LH deputy Udo Landbauer.

New trains and better offers
“The passenger record makes us very proud and at the same time it is a mandate to continue working on improvements. This year we are getting six more trains from the modern TW500 series. We are constantly modernizing our route network and recently modernized the last not completely barrier-free stop in Neu Erlaa. Every passenger we win for the Badner Bahn is a contribution to lower CO2 emissions and more climate protection,” says Thomas Gruber, Managing Director of the operating company Wiener Lokalbahnen.

Switching from cars to public transport is an important contribution to climate protection. A single person saves around 1.6 tons of CO2 per year if they use the train instead of a car to commute from Baden to Vienna.

“The Badner Bahn shows what successful city-surrounding traffic should look like. It connects Vienna with the southern surrounding area and is an important direct connection for tens of thousands of passengers every day. In addition, the VOR climate tickets for the metropolitan region are an additional incentive for many people to switch to the Badner Bahn or public transport in general,” emphasize VOR managing directors Karin Zipperer and Wolfgang Schroll.
