Whether skiing in the mountains, the annual summer vacation or the city trip at the weekend: travel has become a no longer possible to be part of our lifestyle. Tourism creates added value, prosperity and cosmopolitanism, in many places but also negative effects such as crowds, environmental interventions or increasing housing costs.
Die Exhibition “About Tourism” of the Architecture Center Vienna (AZ W) deals with the dark side of mass tourism and shows pioneering, local and international solutions for a new way of travel.
- At the invitation of the Seestädter Development Society Vienna 3420, she is From February 7 to March 2, 2025 in the VHS cultural archarage see
- Opening and vernissage am Thursday, February 6th
- At the Podium discussion “Is tourism over?” am Thursday, February 27thamong other things, the city and tourism researcher Cornelia Dlabaja, Florian van der Bellen, Head of Destination Development at PKF Hospitality and Katharina Ritter, co-curator of the exhibition with strategies such as the concept of “decentralized tourism”.
“As one of the largest urban development projects in Europe, the Seestadt is a attraction for visitors from all over the world. With the start of his campaign ‘Heartbeat Streets’ in 2024, Wient tourism also relies on the Viennese Grätel outside of the historical city as one of the Viennese Grätz. With our innovative strategies for a sustainable and climate -friendly urban future, we focus on aspects that will also be crucial for the tourism of the future. It is therefore important to us in two ways to give space to this discussion, ”says Robert GrüneisBoard of the Wien 3420 Development Society Aspern Development AG.
How does sustainable tourism work?
Hotspots suffer from the rush of visitors, while other places are left behind. Municipalities are often divided: on the one hand, they benefit from tourism, on the other hand, they are increasingly perceiving unwanted side effects.
How can tourism remain a future fit in times of climate crisis, wars, impending other pandemics, shortage of skilled workers and a continuing energy crisis? What role do spatial planning and architecture play? The exhibition illuminates central aspects of tourism such as mobility, city tourism, interactions with agriculture, climate change, the privatization of natural beauty to the change in accologies and explains the question of whether and how tourism development is planned. Above all, she is looking for transformation potential.
“Our ‘holiday fair’ of a different kind is aimed at all of us and makes it clear: there is an urgent need for action. Using many positive examples and possible solutions, we would also like to show that it can be different. We are very pleased that we can use the VHS cultural archarage to play a particularly attractive location in a young part of Vienna and address a new audience, ”said Angelika FitzDirector of the Vienna Architecture Center.
