AVISO – Wed, March 13, 2024 Citizens’ Forum: How many rails does Austria need?

Target network 2040 – a missed opportunity?

Vienna (OTS) Die Students’ Union at the TU Vienna (HTU) loads together with the Lobau Forum to a citizens’ forum on the currently published “Target Network 2040” technical draft. This forum, consisting of specialist lectures and a discussion panel, is intended to initiate a broader process of civil society participation. Questions, contributions and statements from students, citizens and initiatives are also submitted online in advance www.zielnetz.at published.

At the end of January, the BMK and ÖBB presented the target network 2040 technical draft – a long-term, forward-looking strategic plan of what rail expansion in Austria could look like for the next 15 – 20 years.
But is this plan actually viable for the future? Are the needs of commuters, urban and regional populations, freight traffic and long-distance connections adequately balanced? Is regional transport being neglected? To what extent were planning goals and the interaction of other forms of mobility integrated? And is there enough transparency in the creation process?

The Citizens’ Forum deals with these and other questions. How much rail does Austria need? Target network 2040“. The HTU Vienna and the Lobau Forum want to provide an impetus to bring this groundbreaking strategy concept into a broader socio-political discussion. All interested parties, especially students at the TU Vienna and the many civil society rail and mobility initiatives, should be given the opportunity to share their opinion on this transport policy strategy document. The future of the younger generations in particular will have a lasting impact on this document.
