Article 19 of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UN CRPD) guarantees the right to self-determined housing and life in society. But in Austria there is still a lack of barrier-free apartments, sufficient support measures and social security. As a result, many people with disabilities are forced to live in institutions.
Main topics of the press conference:
- What does de-institutionalization mean?
- Current implementation gaps in Austria based on concrete examples
- Necessary steps for de-institutionalization and poverty reduction in Austria
Your conversation partners:
- Prof. Dr. Tobias Buchner and Daniela Rammel – Chairmanship team of the Independent Monitoring Committee
- DSA Mag.a Gerlinde Heim, MA – Managing Director of VertriebsNetz
Hybrid press conference “Living independently as a person with disabilities – a right, not a privilege!”
On the Day of People with Disabilities (December 3), the monitoring committee and the representation network criticize failures in de-institutionalization and the fight against poverty. We ask media representatives to register at heidemarie.egger@monitoring committee.at
