AVISO November 16th: BGM Ludwig and LH Mikl-Leitner illuminate the Vienna Christmas tree

The Vienna Christmas market is open! Since 10 a.m., the 99 market stalls on Rathausplatz, the ice cream dream at the Christmas market and numerous other attractions have been available for visitors from Vienna and all over the world.

The best way for visitors to reach the Vienna Christmas Market is in public. The Wiener Linien recommends traveling to Rathausplatz with the U2 to Schottentor, with the U3 to Volkstheater, with tram lines 1, 2, 71 and D to the Parliament stop or with line 2 to the Rathaus stop. The Rathausplatz, Burgtheater stop will be served from November 15th to December 22nd on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays as well as on December 25th and 26th, from 3:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. This ensures safe arrival and departure even when there are large crowds at the Christmas market.

Saturday: Ceremonial illumination on the town hall square

Tomorrow, Saturday, November 16th, Vienna will officially ring in the pre-Christmas season: Vienna’s mayor Michael Ludwig and the Lower Austrian governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner will jointly carry out the ceremonial lighting of the Christmas tree at the Vienna Christkindlmarkt on this day. In addition to the tree, the festively decorated town hall park, including the popular “Herzerlbaum”, also shines in full splendor with lights for the first time.

Since 1959, Vienna has been presented with a Christmas tree every year by a different federal state, and since 1989 South Tyrol has also taken part in this tradition. This year, Lower Austria is providing a tree for the seventh time.

The spruce tree, which is around 30 meters high and around 80 years old, comes from the market town of Rastenfeld in the Waldviertel. The tree was put up on the town hall square on October 29th and this year it is decorated with 2,000 LED lights and, for the first time, around 1,000 Christmas balls.

Representatives of the media are cordially invited to the illumination. Admission to the area closed to media representatives is from 4:15 p.m. and only after prior accreditation presse@stadtwienmarketing.at possible. Looking towards the town hall, the entrance is on the left side of the Christmas tree next to stand 63.
