For low-income families, a new school year represents an enormous financial burden. Continuing inflation is causing the cost of school supplies to continue to rise, which is an additional cause for concern for many parents. With the school start campaign, Caritas of the Archdiocese of Vienna is once again supporting families in need at the start of the new school year and is offering a large selection of school supplies at affordable prices in the carlas – such as school bags and bags, painting boxes, gym bags and notebooks. In order to be able to support even more people, Caritas continues to ask for school supplies that are in good condition – these can be dropped off at the carlas during opening hours.

Caritas learning cafés: Poverty prevention through education

In Austria, one in five children is considered to be at risk of poverty or exclusion – that is currently around 376,000 children and young people. In addition to school costs, the costs of supporting children through tutoring also represent a major challenge for low-income families. The 69 Caritas learning cafés throughout Austria have been responding to this problem since 2007 and offering free learning and afternoon care. The goal is to actively support children and young people on their educational path. In addition to providing specific help with homework and preparing for school work and tests, the supervisors are primarily concerned with making the children enjoy learning.
