How can we create a fairer and more sustainable world? For Linda Nøstbakken, the answer lies in the data. With her lecture on “Using the Power of Data for the Common Good”, the Research Director of Statistics Norway and Professor of Economics at the Norwegian School of Economics (NHH) continues the series of events organized by Statistics Austria and the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW). .
In her keynote, she provides insights into how economic research based on official statistics can not only better reflect reality, but also provide trend-setting impulses for society. Using examples from her work on endangered species, renewable energy and the oceans, she will show how science and official statistics contribute to decision-making and better understanding of social and environmental challenges.
Harness the power of data
“When science and data work hand in hand, completely new horizons for social progress open up. The future belongs to those who rely on facts and empiricism,” says ÖAW Vice President Ulrike Diebold, who is inviting people to the event together with Tobias Thomas, Director General of Statistics Austria.
Thomas emphasizes the importance of such collaborations: “The central challenge of our time is to translate the wealth of data into reliable information. Big data alone does not solve any of the currently pressing questions. Through the collaboration between Statistics Austria and empirical research, we create a sound basis for decision-making for politics, business and society for greater prosperity and ecological, economic and social sustainability.”
The ÖAW Statistics Austria Lectures highlight trends and issues in applied statistics with regard to social challenges. By intensifying the dialogue, science and Statistics Austria should receive important impulses to strengthen empirical research in Austria as a science location. At the individual events, international guest speakers present high-quality research work with data from Statistics Austria or innovations in statistics.
