Austrian premiere: Artist and cabaret artist Dieter Nuhr shows works in Vienna for the first time

Wien (OTS/LCG) The German artist Dieter Nuhr is exhibiting in Austria for the first time and is showing works from his most recent series. The exhibition “Somewhere is everywhere”, supported by the Brost Foundation, can be seen from July 10th to August 4th, 2024 in the exhibition center on Vienna’s Freyung.

Dieter Nuhr is known to a wide audience primarily as a multi-award-winning cabaret artist and satirist. But in recent years his painting, drawing and photographic work has increasingly come into the public eye. As a multimedia artist, he has created an impressive oeuvre as a visual artist over many years, which is increasingly emerging from the shadow of his artistic work. His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries in the Ruhr area and worldwide, including Rome, Hagen, Venice, Beijing, Shanghai and Dakar.

With the solo exhibition “Dieter Nuhr: Somewhere is everywhere” at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna, which is supported by the Essen Brost Foundation and coordinated by the Düsseldorf Association for Art in Public, he is now presenting his work in Austria for the first time. On an exhibition area of 900 square meters, mainly large-format photographic works, paintings and drawings from his most recent series of works can be seen. The Ruhr area, one of the largest industrial regions in Europe, where Nuhr was born and grew up, plays a central role. In the light-flooded rooms of the renowned exhibition center, these motifs enter into a fascinating dialogue with impressions from the most remote regions of the world, which Nuhr tirelessly explores on his travels and captures on camera.

Elsewhere is everywhere

Dieter Nuhrs artistic motifs are diverse. They include impressive landscapes, portraits and everyday scenes that he captures on his travels through all continents and in his immediate surroundings. With the same investigative eye, he explores the Ruhr area, his homeland, as well as distant countries such as India, Laos and Senegal. Nuhr’s attention is always on the special, the unique and often ignored. For his drawings he also draws on autobiographical and historical sources as well as materials from museums and archives that tell the history of the Ruhr area, and thus also his own.

The multimedia artist subjects his photographs and drawings to extensive digital processing. He combines different photographic materials, colors, patterns and structures, thereby robbing the images of their clarity. This artistic alienation addresses the duality of foreignness and familiarity, distance and closeness, as well as our relationship to the world and our homeland.

The exhibition “Dieter Nuhr – Somewhere is Everywhere” at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna is the start of an international exhibition tour that will last until 2028 and will make a total of ten stops worldwide. It is made possible by the Brost Foundation, one of the largest foundations for art and culture in Germany, and coordinated by the Association for Art in Public. The exhibition will also be on view at the Bavarian National Museum in Munich from November 7th to December 8th, 2024.

“The title is more of an appeal than an interpretation. ‘Somewhere else is everywhere’. The eloquent Mr. Nuhr does not use his title as a pun or aphorism. It is the quintessence of his ‘expedition into the interior’. Dieter Nuhr explores the Ruhr area from a historical perspective. But – and this is subjective perception – it’s not about documentation or determination. It’s about force fields and shaping things. The identifiable metaphors are ‘bridge’ and ‘encounter’.”describes Bodo HombachChairman of the Board of the Brost Foundation, the exhibition.

“Dieter Nuhr has established himself as a multimedia artist alongside his career as a cabaret artist. His impressive oeuvre, exhibited in renowned museums and galleries around the world, reflects his deep connection to the Ruhr area and his travels to remote corners of the world. The exhibition ‘Somewhere else is everywhere’ at the Bank Austria Kunstforum Vienna shows Nuhr’s unique ability to put the familiar and the strange into a fascinating dialogue.”commented Dirk GeuerKurator Association for Art in Public.

About the artist

Dieter Nuhr, born in Wesel, Germany, in 1960, lives and works in Düsseldorf, Berlin and Ibiza. He works as an artist on various platforms and has been one of the most successful satirists in Germany for many years. However, his career as a visual artist began even earlier. From 1981 to 1987 he studied painting at the University of Essen, the former Folkwang School. After initially devoting himself to painting, Nuhr began experimenting with photography in the early 1990s. The fascination for this medium still accompanies him today.

With his new works, Nuhr has developed a unique and recognizable form of expression that has earned him great recognition in professional circles. This is clearly reflected in his exhibition history. In the last two years, renowned institutions such as the Osthaus Museum in Hagen, the Biblioteca Nazionale Marciana in Venice, the Musée Théodore Monod d’Art Africain in Dakar, the Museo nationale delle arti del XXI secolo (MAXXI) in Rome and most recently have dedicated their work to him the Ludwig Museum in Koblenz solo exhibitions.
