With the ceremonial opening of the first facility for the production of copper cathodes from mining residues (Tailings) of the Sultanate Oman, a future-oriented industrial project was successfully implemented in early June. The facility in Suhar is the first of its kind in the entire region and converts contaminated sites from copper mining using the latest environmental technologies and renewable energy into high -purity copper.
The Austrian BPG Group is in charge of its Omani subsidiary, Green Tech Mining & Services. Together with the Oman Mining Company and with direct support from the Omani Ministry for Trading, Industry and Investment Promotion (Mociip), the major project was realized. The investment amount is the equivalent of around 93 million euros.
“This project is a model for a sustainable, sustainable mining industry – it combines resource efficiency, circular economy and international technology transfer. We are proud to have participated in the BPG Group with our Omani subsidiary,” says Ernst Grissemann, Managing Director of BPG resident in Vienna.
The start of production is scheduled for June 2025. In the first phase, the system will produce 60 to 250 tons of copper cathodes per year – the capacity is to be expanded to 12,000 to 17,000 tons annually by the end of 2026. The copper cathodes are classified as a sustainable recycled metal and will flow into global supply chains of the green industry in the future.

With this milestone, the BPG Group confirms its commitment to sustainable major projects in the field of critical raw materials in international space – at the interface of environmental responsibility, technology export and industrial added value.
