Austria threatens to miss climate target in 2030
Vienna (OTS) –

The new climate protection scenario of the Federal Environment Agency shows alarming results: The climate protection measures implemented in Austria are far from sufficient to reach the EU climate target 2030. Austria threatens to miss the destination for 9 million tons of greenhouse gases in 2030. The 2040 climate neutrality is also not nearly accessible in the current scenario. A misconduct of the EU climate goals would have real and costly consequences, because Austria would then have to buy expensive certificates from other EU countries, otherwise there is a risk of an EU violation procedure.

Greenpeace appeals to Norbert Tettschnig to take his office as a climate protection minister seriously and to increase the pace of the urgently needed climate protection measures. Above all, it is important to present a strong climate law with a clear commitment to climate neutrality 2040, obligation to exit fossil energy and ambitious reductions in the climate -damaging greenhouse gases.

Jasmin Duregger, climate and energy expert at Greenpeace: “The climate protection scenario is an urgent wake-up call. Austria threatens to miss its EU climate goals, should not quickly be implemented new climate protection measures. Minister of climate in Tay is required to present an ambitious climate network, with clear reduction paths towards climate neutrality 2040, exit plans from oil and gas, and without dangerous back doors International certificate trade “.

The climate protection scenario created by the Federal Environment Agency shows the development of climate-damaging emissions in Austria until 2050. The basis of the calculations is all climate protection measures that have been decided by June 2024, such as CO2 price increases or the Renewable Heat Act. Greenpeace appeals to the federal government to say goodbye to a strong climate law and to end climate -damaging funding as quickly as possible. Especially in the current planning of investment incentives for the economy, climate funding must not be forgotten. The empty pot for the renovation and heating boiler exchange must be quickly filled by the government.
