Tanner signed a European cyber project together with Lithuania and Latvia
Vienna (OTS) – Austria is expanding its cyber defense capabilities in the future: Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner signed the PESCO “Cyber Rapid Response Team” project initiated by Lithuania together with Latvia this week during the defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels and in the presence of Lithuania’s Defense Minister Laurynas Kasčiūnas. .
The aim of the project is to improve and promote cooperation between the member states of the European Union in the cyber area. The Austrian Armed Forces is not only strengthening its cyber response capabilities within Austria, but also within the European Union. The European cyber project is specifically designed for rapid response and prevention against cyber threats. Measures and cooperation like these are absolutely necessary for Austria in order to strengthen national cyber capabilities and to be able to react even more quickly and efficiently in the event of a threat.
“Austria has already committed to working more closely with international partners in the area of cyber defense in 2023. By signing the PESCO project in the cyber area, we are taking the next step and creating synergies and sharpening cross-border cooperation. Due to the growing cyber threats and increasing number of criminal incidents, the establishment of a so-called “Cyber Rapid Response Team” is an important measure. This project of a rapid force in the field of countering cyber threats is intended to make a significant contribution to increasing cooperation at the EU level,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner.
Due to the growing threat in cyberspace and the noticeably increasing number of critical cybersecurity incidents, the deployment of a rapid cyber response team (“Cyber Rapid Response Teams”) is urgently necessary for the Austrian Armed Forces to protect its own information and communication systems.
The Federal Army will invest around 40 million euros in the cyber sector over the next four years.
Cyber Rapid Response Team
The so-called “Cyber Rapid Response Team” is a team of cyber specialists whose task is to detect, analyze and defend against cyber attacks anywhere. Traces of attacks are secured, in-depth expertise is provided and measures are taken in order to be able to respond appropriately to threats and attacks. The cyber response team therefore represents an extension of the cyber forces and makes a significant contribution to cyber defense.
PESCO – Permanent Structured Cooperation
PESCO (“Permanent Structured Cooperation”) is intended, among other things, to increase interoperability between EU member states in the defense sector, optimize EU operations, synchronize national army structures and implement joint armaments projects.
