Contract signed with Embraer in Farnborough
Vienna (OTS) – Today, July 22, 2024, 2 p.m. (GMT+1), the Netherlands and aircraft manufacturer Embraer will sign the contract for nine Embraer “C-390 Millennium” transport aircraft in Farnborough, Great Britain. With the signing, the Austrian Armed Forces will receive four “C-390M” transport aircraft for its air force in cooperation with the Netherlands.
“Today is a happy day for the Austrian Armed Forces and its air force. Today’s contract signing and thus the now fixed purchase of the four new transport aircraft is a milestone for the Austrian Ministry of Defense! With this procurement, our air force will not only be at the cutting edge of technology in the future, but will also be able to fully fulfill its mission for military and humanitarian operations. I am pleased that the first two will land in Austria from 2028,” said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner on the occasion of the contract signing. “We have found a reliable partner in the Netherlands. In addition to the cheaper procurement of the new transport aircraft, we also have the advantage that we will be able to train our pilots and technicians together in the future and work together in the area of maintenance. I am pleased that we can make such a big leap forward in the procurement of our transport aircraft!”
Contract concluded between Netherlands and Embraer
The joint procurement of the four Embraer “C-390 Millennium” for the Austrian Air Force is carried out in cooperation with the Netherlands. The aircraft with the logistical services, mission equipment and the necessary training for pilots and technicians as well as the necessary infrastructure and spare parts will be procured in an overall package with a planned budget of around one billion euros.
The new aircraft system will be stationed in Hörsching and will be available as an air transport system for the Austrian Air Force for at least 30 years.
The possible uses of the Embraer C-390M include air transport (personnel, material), patient transport, evacuations, landing on unpaved runways or the dropping of parachutists from the air.
The transport aircraft can be used to transport loads of up to 26,000 kg or vehicle transports up to the size of a Pandur Evolution with a mounted weapon station, 80 passengers, 60 parachutists and also medical evacuation missions (MEDEVAC).
In addition to the Netherlands and Austria, the C-390M is used as an air transport system by Portugal, Hungary and the Czech Republic or is currently being procured. Procurement of this aircraft model is also planned in other European nations. There are therefore opportunities for cooperation in training, maintenance or the procurement of spare parts with European nations.
The first two transport aircraft are scheduled to land in Austria from 2028. Delivery will be completed by 2030.
