Austria and Italy connected by a tunnel for the first time

With the ceremonial impact of the exploration tunnel in the Brenner base tunnel, an event of historical dimension has been successful today. Together with the European Union, Austria and Italy celebrate this decisive progress in one of the most important railway infrastructure projects in Europe.

In the presence of numerous high-ranking personalities and around 1,000 guests-especially the European EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the director of DG Move, Eric von Breska, the Italian state government, represented by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and the deputy prime minister Matto Salvini, the Austrian Federal government, represented by Federal Chancellor Christian Stocker and Transport Minister Peter Hanke, the governor of Tyrol, Anton Mattle and South Tyrol, Arno Kompatscher, as well as the board member of the Austrian Federal Railways, ÖBB-Infrastructure AG, Judith Engel, the board of the Italian State Railway Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI), Aldo isi Traffic councils from Tyrol, Renè Zumtobel and South Tyrol, Daniel Alfreider, the Italian and Austrian members of the BBT SE and the representatives of the construction companies of both countries – this historical moment was committed with great dignity.

The exploration tunnels: the unique selling point of the BBT
The exploration tunnel of the Brenner base tunnel has a unique unique selling point of this construction project. With a length of around 57.5 kilometers, it is one of the longest of its kind worldwide. It is not intended for train traffic, but serves as a technical apron for geological studies, material transports as well as service and maintenance purposes and can also be used as a escape route in the event of an event.

With its length of 64 kilometers, the Brenner base tunnel will be the longest railway tunnel in the world after completing it. He will shift millions of tons of goods from the street to rail, relieve the sensitive Alpine regions and make Austria and Italy pioneers of sustainable European transport policy. ”
