Vienna (OTS) – He was crowned “Emperor” by the fans and yet he was a down-to-earth Bavarian. Franz Beckenbauer, two-time world champion (once as a player, once as a coach), father of the 2006 summer fairy tale and for many the best German footballer in history, died on January 7th. On January 19th, FC Bayern will say goodbye to their greatest at a memorial ceremony in the Allianz Arena. In addition, ORF 1 will show the documentary “Beckenbauer”, a Bayerischer Rundfunk production, on Thursday, January 18th, 2024 at 8:15 p.m. – and repeat it on ORF 1 on January 19th at 4:15 p.m. The athlete biography by Philipp Grüll and Christoph Nahr is also a journey through the history of the Federal Republic of Germany. In addition to the athlete, coach and World Cup organizer, the focus is also on Franz Beckenbauer as a person. For their documentation, the two authors evaluated countless hours of archive material and tens of thousands of photos; they interviewed close companions, teammates, opponents, ex-top politicians, former life partners and his brother. The result is a 90-minute portrait of a unique sports personality who for a long time only knew light and later had to learn to live with shadows.
