Asylum statistics July 2025 – decline in applications consistently continues

The statistics of the Interior Ministry on Asylum applications for last July are positive: the tendency of the applications is steadily decreasing and proves the effectiveness of the political and police measures.

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner: “In the past few months, a bundle of measures for a strict, hard and fair asylum policy has been implemented, such as the exposure to family reunification, the introduction of the non -cash performance card or consistent deportations. This is intended to push illegal migration against zero.

Statistics: Only 33 % are applications – the remaining subsequent applications

From January to July 2025, 10,219 applications for international protection were made in Austria. This is a decline of approx. 33 % for the comparison period 2024 (15,433 applications).

Important: In turn, about two thirds of the asylum applications made this year were followed by follow -up applications (of people who already have protection status and for various reasons again for such a search, e.g. women from Afghanistan who have had subsidiary protection and are now submitting an asylum sequence). People with subsequent application are usually already with protection status in Austria, so these people did not come to the federal territory. This is a clear sign that illegal migration could be pushed for zero.

In the first place in the statistics there are Afghan citizens in July. 479 applications were made here, but only 188 applications are new. The rest are follow -up applications or applications from children born in Austria.

A total of 1,582 asylum applications were made in July. Compared to July of the previous year, the decline is 12 % or 217 applications.

The decision statistics

In the period from January to July 2025, the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and Asylum (BFA) negatively described or discontinued procedures. By the end of July, 1,082 people voluntarily waived protection and left Austria during the procedure.

Asylum or subsidiary protection was granted in 6,064 cases. The applicant from Morocco (1.7 %), Georgia (1.6 %) and India (1.9 %) had no chance of asylum in July. Here the Federal Office for Foreign Affairs and Asylum continues to use quick procedures. By the end of July, 415 negative decisions were made within 28 days or 72 hours in the first instance.

Low numbers in basic supply – savings in the asylum area possible

There are currently 57,036 people in basic care (including 1,178 in federal support). In turn, around 56 % of these are war -displaced from Ukraine – a large part of them women and children. The number of basic services has been massively reduced in the past two years (at the beginning of 2023, almost 93,000 people were still in basic care). This also enables urgently needed savings in the asylum area: the number of federal quarters alone has been reduced from more than 30 to currently eight in the past two years.

Preliminary figures for deportations January until July 2025

Of the 7,829 deportations of the BFA, 4,031 (51 %) without compulsory means and 3,798 (49 %) were forced. 49 % of the people are convicted of the deportations. For example, a total of 560 Dublin transfers were carried out by the end of July, including 68 Syrians, 68 Afghans and 60 Algerians.

View to other European countries

In Europe (including Switzerland & Norway) there were less applications with 450,488 asylum applications until the end of July with 450,488 asylum applications than in the comparison period 2024 (572.764). Applications have increased in Latvia (+36 %), Luxembourg (+11 %), Croatia (+6 %) and Poland (+5 %).

Applications in many other countries have decreased, Cyprus (-68 %), Bulgaria (-66 %), Romania (-49 %), Germany (-43 %), Netherlands (-36 %) and Italy (-22 %). In Austria, applications are also significantly reduced compared to the previous year (-34 %) and the decline can therefore also be classified well above the European average. Extraured to the population, Austria lies in the 10th place in Europe -wide statistics. In the absolute figures, Austria is behind Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands and in front of Poland and Ireland across the EU.
