“The FPÖ’s recent motion in the Vienna City Council to revoke the status of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is a dangerous and unacceptable attack on peaceful coexistence in our country. The FPÖ is once again trying to use unsubstantiated allegations made by the IGGÖ itself were clearly rejected as “misleading reporting”, to divide and to delegitimize the representation of Muslim people in Austria. The ÖVP’s approval of this application is just as dramatic,” criticizes Aslihan Bozatemur, SPÖ local councilor and member of the state parliament.
“The IGGÖ is a legally recognized religious society and an important partner for interreligious dialogue, which is committed to respectful and peaceful coexistence in our society. The demand to revoke this status divides society and is completely unacceptable,” continued Bozatemur .
“We as the SPÖ stand clearly against this dangerous populism of the FPÖ and firmly reject the proposal. In Vienna we work shoulder to shoulder for a coexistence that is based on respect and tolerance,” Bozatemur concludes.
