Around 50,000 people protested in front of the Federal Chancellery
Vienna (OTS) –

The Austrian Civil Society Network (ÖNZ) had called for a protest at Ballhausplatz this evening against the threat of orbanization of Austria. Around 50,000 people followed the call and formed a chain around the Federal Chancellery. The ÖNZ warns that, following the example of Viktor Orban, state institutions, free media and the judiciary, critical organizations and citizens are being attacked in Hungary. The implementation of the FPÖ programs, in coalition with the ÖVP, would also mean serious setbacks for central areas of society.

Answer Lang, ÖNZ / Attac Austria:
“If the election programs of the FPÖ and ÖVP have their way, Austria will have a government for the super-rich and large corporations. That is exactly the opposite of what is actually necessary: more social security and a fair contribution from the richest. At the same time, there should also be democratic ones Structures and the independence of important media are being attacked. Today’s demonstration was a first strong signal against this. More will follow.”

Ursula Bittner, ÖNZ / Greenpeace Austria:
“An FPÖ-led government under Chancellor Herbert Kickl would mean a serious setback for nature and climate protection in Austria. The FPÖ also regularly calls for harsh punishments for critical activists and repeatedly massively attacks critical civil society organizations. People in Austria must have the freedom to advocate for their concerns without fear of criminalization and repression.”

Alexander Pollak, ÖNZ / SOS fellow human being:
“There is a threat of a radical authoritarian attack on central pillars of our democracy. Starting from attacks on the independence of the judiciary and human rights through to massive deteriorations in the areas of press freedom, environmental protection, the welfare state and the standing of Austria in Europe. We are therefore sounding the alarm and urgently appealing to the parties in the current political center to assume their responsibility for the republic and not to take part in a destructive authoritarian turn. It’s not too late yet.”

“Today’s rally was the start of civil society protests, we will continue to remain vigilant and active. The ball is now in the court of the sensible political forces in this country – they must prevent an FPÖ chancellorship,” says Lang.

The ÖNZ consists of 34 leading organizations from important subject areas such as social, environmental and animal protection as well as human rights.
