Today, on May 15, 2025, around 270 soldiers spoke their loyalty to the Republic of Austria in front of Belvedere Castle. The recruits of the recruits were solemn in memory of the signing of the state contract to restore the independence of Austria. The state contract was signed exactly 70 years ago in the marble hall of the Upper Belvedere. Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, the Viennese military commander Brigadier Kurt Wagner, the deputy to the state parliament and municipal councilor Marcus Schober, the district manager Landstraße Erich Hohenberger and other representatives from politics, business and military took part in the ceremony.
“Especially in this historical place where the state contract was signed 70 years ago, the logging in our recruits is a strong sign of our freedom, our neutrality and our defense.
The basic military servants of the guard are subsequently used as infantry soldiers, but also support the Federal President, representative of the Federal Government and the head of the general staff in protocol obligations, state visits and receptions of foreign ambassadors or chiefs of staff. The soldiers of the service company at the Vienna military command are used to maintain everyday business and the military infrastructure, which comprises more than 20 official buildings, barracks, other military properties and a shooting range in Vienna.
“I would like to thank all recruits for the decision to complete the basic military service at the Austrian Armed Forces in these difficult times. With the signing of the State Treaty in Belvedere Castle Exactly 70 years ago, we are at the cradle for a free, independent and defensive Austria. There is no more suitable place for a commission. Years of Austrian Armed Forces, which guarantees this, ”says Brigadier Wagner.
The Austrian State Treaty was signed on May 15, 1955 in the Upper Belvedere and presented by Foreign Minister Leopold Figl on the balcony. After the ratification by Austria, the Soviet Union, the USA, France and Great Britain, it came into force on July 27 and the deduction period of 90 days began for the occupying powers. Thus, the occupation officially ended on October 25, 1955. Austria received its full sovereignty, the next day the National Council decided the Federal Constitutional Act on the neutrality of Austria, ten years later the National Council for the Austrian National Day was determined.
