Christmas is just around the corner again, and for many people the festively decorated Christmas tree is simply part of it. But before it can beautify the living room or front garden, it has to be transported safely. To ensure that no pre-Christmas mishaps happen, ARBÖ has put together the best tips for safe Christmas tree transport.
The most important thing when transporting Christmas trees is to secure the load properly, because the same rules apply to the festive Christmas tree as to any other load. “Improper transport can not only be dangerous, it can also result in penalties of up to 10,000 euros and a point being noted in the driver’s license register. If an accident occurs and the load was not properly secured, problems with the insurance are also inevitable,” explains ARBÖ legal expert Mag. Johann Kopinits.
If the load protrudes more than one meter beyond the limits of the vehicle, the legally required marking must be observed. A board measuring 25 x 40 cm and a red reflective border (5 cm wide) is required. This also applies to Christmas trees that are transported on the roof. In poor visibility conditions such as rain, snow or fog, a red reflector must also be attached.
ARBÖ tips for safe transport
On the roof: Tie down the tree stably, with the tip pointing backwards. A net offers additional security.
Inside: Lay the tree sideways and secure it well so that it cannot become a dangerous projectile.
The driver’s view must not be restricted by the tree or means of transport. In particular, the view in the rear-view mirror and the side windows must remain clear.
Old blankets or tarpaulins under the tree prevent scratches and resin stains and keep the car clean.
- Check handbrake and gear lever:
Before setting off, ensure that all controls are easily accessible and working.
- Adjusted speed:
Drive carefully and avoid sudden braking maneuvers to bring the tree safely to its destination.
