Arapovic (NEOS Vienna) on the Federal Government’s ‘Housing Billion’ – Well-intentioned does not automatically mean well-done!

Vienna (OTS) NEOS Vienna housing spokeswoman Selma Arapovic fundamentally welcomes any initiative that stimulates housing construction and the construction industry. However, she emphasizes that it is crucial to design housing support for a specific purpose: “It is of utmost importance that the funds provided by the federal government are actually used for the construction, renovation and, above all, the decarbonization of housing. The federal government is called upon to do this “to create appropriate legal obligations.”

In the federal government’s “housing package” presented today, NEOS Vienna particularly misses the focus on the renovation and decarbonization of the existing housing stock when building new living space. This would enable real alternatives to new construction on so-called greenfield sites, taking into account the issue of soil sealing. The conscious use of land as a resource should always be taken into account when funding new living space. Particularly in Vienna, where historic and older buildings make up a significant portion of the living space, existing renovations and targeted densification can make a significant contribution to the creation of living space.

“If you actually want to relieve people’s burdens, create sustainable living space and really stimulate the construction industry, you also have to present the right and far-reaching reforms and measures. The federal government has failed to do this today,” concluded Arapovic.
