APG power balance 2024: Austria for the first time again exportland

Vienna (OTS) –

The current year 2024 was a year of records. An exceptionally high production of renewable energy ensured that Austria has become an electricity export country for the first time, since 2009 with 4,747 GWH. The export record can be attributed to two effects: on the one hand, the massive expansion of the PV systems has a positive effect on the annual balance sheet, on the other hand, the yields from the running hydropower were enormously high due to the high water supply bid. “The past year has also shown the high importance of the national power grid for the transformation of the energy system. For example, as often as ever excess sun and wind power had to be transported from the northeast to the pumped storage power plants in the west. We are increasingly reaching the capacity limits of the networks, so that renewable production had to be reduced on numerous days, ”said APG board spokesman Gerhard Christiner.

Cold dark bravages and network bottlenecks call for gas power plants

In addition, periods with dark downs and network passes had to be dominated by the transmission system operator APG last year. These phases are characterized by high import due to windbill and lack of sunlight. “In such cases, high consumption with low renewable harvesting is always necessary to have gas power plants starting to secure domestic power supply. With a powerful power grid and good international networking, such periods could also be better compensated for by importing renewables from abroad. A departure of a secure network reserve by gas power plants would be irresponsible at the present time with the current expansion of the transmission network, ”said Christiner.

In 2024 Austria was able to export electricity on 243 days

The course of the year shows how volatile the overall system has become due to the increasing proportion of renewables. The massive expansion of PV systems: Austria is currently around 8,200 MW installed PV output-around 200 MW was added every month. The current status of the wind removal is around 4,000 MW. Supplemented by extremely good water management, these factors led to seasonally high exports in the first quarter of the year or a historical export maximum of 5,406 MW in September as well as import dependency in the annual final.

In 2024, an exceptionally high production of renewable energies (57,713 GWH) – this corresponds to an increase of 14.4 percent compared to renewable production in 2023. Austria was able to export electricity abroad in 2024 in 2024.

About Austrian Power Grid (APG)

As an independent transmission system operator, Austrian Power Grid (APG) is responsible for safe power supply Austria. With our powerful and digital electricity infrastructure, as well as the application of State-of-the-art-Technologien If we integrate renewable energies and thus reduce import dependency, are platform for the electricity market, create access to inexpensive electricity and thus form the basis for a supply-proof and future-proof economic and lifeline. The APG network extends over a route length of around 3,500 km, which the company maintains with a team of around 1,000 specialist: operates, maintains and continuously the increasing requirements of the electrification adapted to society, economy and industry. A large part of the 67 substances that are distributed throughout Austria are operated by the tax center in Vienna. In 2024, security of supply was also thanks to the committed employees: inside, 99.99 percent and thus in the world’s top field.
