Another multi-million dollar start-up company with its starting point at MCI | MCI

Another example of MCI’s entrepreneurial success and location relevance New campus urgently needed | The MCI is highly willing to implement it in partnership

Innsbruck (OTS) Good News: As recently reported in the media, the Danish group Novo Nordisk, through its parent company Novo Holdings, has just acquired a 60% majority stake in the Tyrolean company Single Use Support in order to tap further growth potential on a global level.

Single Use Support was founded in 2015 by MCI graduates Johannes Kirchmair and Thomas Wurm at the Kufstein-Tirol location and has established itself as a global player in the biopharmaceutical industry with breathtaking speed. Single Use Support employs several hundred people, achieves an annual turnover of around 100 million euros, a net profit of around 70 million euros and represents a rumored company value of almost one billion euros.

MCI Rector Andreas Altmann:It is with great pleasure that the MCI team congratulates the successful founding team and all employees of Single Use Support. We have followed and accompanied the success story of Single Use Support with great interest from the very beginning. In addition to the two founders Thomas Wurm and Johannes Kirchmair, the new managing director Christian Praxmarer also studied at the MCI as well as many other MCI alumni who contribute to the great success of Single Use Support every day.”

Single Use Support is just one of many companies that started at MCI and just one of countless forms such as now 500 employees, 1,000 lecturers, 3,500 students and 16,000 alumni in Tyrol and worldwide in research, teaching, further training, technology, innovation and social commitment contribute to competitiveness, prosperity, tax performance and social cohesion and make Innsbruck and Tyrol a place for international exchange and encounters.

Principal Andreas Altmann:All the more reason to resolutely oppose absurd press reports that the MCI is only a ‘university for wealthy foreign students’ who go back abroad after their studies and are taught by ‘expensive foreign teachers’ during their studies.”

The enormous relevance and absolute indispensability of the MCI for the Tyrol location are obvious:

  • A high proportion of the 3,500 MCI students study part-time with a job in Tyrol.
  • Every year, 1,300 students receive a high-quality academic degree in the disciplines of technology, life sciences, computer science/IT, business, tourism, law, health and social affairs that are in high demand on the job market.
  • During their studies, the prospective graduates are networked with local companies and institutions through courses, projects, internships, company visits, theses, recruiting, research projects, start-up projects and numerous other measures. They often already have additional jobs and contribute to innovation in other ways , internationalization and competitiveness of the education, science and business location.
  • All MCI students pay tuition fees (those from EU third countries and in further vocational training are five-figure amounts). At MCI, you will be prepared for your future tasks by more than 1,000 full-time and part-time teachers.
  • Domestic companies can turn to the MCI with complex operational problems and receive valuable scientific know-how and application-oriented solutions in more than 100 research projects.
  • With a revenue of 750,000 euros, the MCI is now one of the ten largest local tax payers in the state capital Innsbruck

“The current spatial situation is now not only completely inadequate, but in many respects it is unbearable, dangerous to health and a daily safety risk. The MCI has been waiting for the new campus that has been so often promised for many years and until then it is scattered across numerous rental locations in Innsbruck, which is associated with financial and organizational burdens that can no longer be managed, makes further developments impossible, requires ongoing investments in third-party property and damages the reputation of the MCI and the common location is equally damaging.

The new campus that has been so often promised is urgently needed in the interests of Tyrol as a location. With the confidence that the project will now be implemented quickly at the end of the pause for reflection, the MCI is available to work in partnership with the state of Tyrol, the city of Innsbruck and the MCI sponsors,” The chairman of the MCI university college Franz Pegger, the works council chairman Johannes Dickel and the ÖH chairman of the MCI Julian Pfurtscheller as well as rector Andreas Altmann report the drama of the situation and the willingness of the MCI community to continue to be actively involved.

Additional information about Single Use Support:

With the help of innovative “Single Use Bags”, Single Use Support simplifies and improves the process of liquid logistics in the biopharma industry, which until the founding of Single Use Support was faced with high losses of high-quality biopharma active ingredients due to leakage or bio-contamination.

Single Use Support thus closes a strategic gap between the down-stream and the fill & finish process in the biopharma industry. Within three years, the two founders created a company whose technology is being talked about in international pharmaceutical companies. By using Single Use Support technology, more high-quality substance can be transported internationally with less logistics and storage volume at unparalleled speed, absolutely safely and completely without loss.

At the turn of the year, the two founders withdrew from the operational business and handed over management to the new CEO Christian Praxmarer, who also studied at MCI and had held various management positions in the company for several years before taking on his new position. The opening of a new location in the USA in March 2024 marked another milestone in the company’s development. The entry of the new majority owner Novo Holdings supports the global expansion with a particular focus on the target markets of the USA, Asia and Africa.

Johannes Kirchmair and Thomas Wurm will continue to hold a minority stake in the company: “With Novo Holdings we were able to bring a long-term and stable partner on board. We look forward to supporting continued success in the future from an advisory perspective.”it says in an earlier broadcast.
