Artificial intelligence products have become an indispensable part of everyday life: from the navigation system in the car to the camera that only takes photos of a smiling face and the robot vacuum cleaner and lawn mower to the cell phone that you can give orders to using voice. And there is much more that is much less noticeable, from the intelligent system that supports diagnostics to the car that automatically brakes if a ball rolls onto the street – a child could be running after it. And then 2 years ago came the text and speech understanding and production system ChatGPT, which struck like lightning due to its enormous knowledge base and completely changed the view of AI.
40 years ago, Austrian scientists got together to conduct research in the fascinating field of artificial intelligence in a university-independent institute, the “Austrian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (OFAI)”. This is in two respects: to make computers “intelligent” so that they make our lives easier, and to learn more about us humans through computer models.
Since its founding, OFAI has participated in 34 successfully implemented European Union multinational projects in addition to numerous projects with other institutes and private companies and was even accepted as a partner in one of the EU’s first two flagship projects. This despite little funding from the public sector. The solution expertise it has built up over decades of research in AI has made OFAI a sought-after partner in research collaborations with industry.
Reason therefore for an event in the ballroom on the first floor of the Palais Teuffenbach, on Thursday, December 5th, 2024 at 4:00 p.m.
After a brief look back at the time of its founding and an overview of research work since then, some important research projects and their results from the rich spectrum of work are presented. The project to give blind people a new object experience by building LEGO models, which has been intensively discussed in the international media since 2019, will be discussed in detail. The Austrian Research Institute for AI achieved a breakthrough by using various AI methods to translate exclusively graphic construction instructions into spoken language.
