VGT demonstrates in front of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Chamber of Agriculture and the ÖVP headquarters in Vienna to remind the government to ban fully slatted floors for pigs
Now things have to be done quickly. We don’t need an unnecessary interim solution like the new fully slatted floor, which has been in effect for new buildings and conversions since 2023.

Vienna (OTS) – Animal Welfare Minister Rauch Yesterday, he stopped by the VGT demonstration in front of the Council of Ministers and spoke to the activists. He emphasized that the ÖVP had to move and that there would now be a much shorter transition period. “There is now an approach path,” he said. When asked if he supported straw for pigs, he literally said, “Yes, of course. You are now completely on the right side.” Negotiations between the government parties have begun. There is not much time left to correct the passages in the Animal Welfare Act that are caused by this Understanding of the Constitutional Court will be invalid from June 1, 2025. In order to remind the ÖVP and the agricultural side of their responsibility in this critical phase, the VGT today held rallies on the fully slatted floor for pigs in front of the Ministry of Agriculture as well as in front of the Chamber of Agriculture and the ÖVP headquarters in Vienna.

The Constitutional Court also repealed this provision. We need mandatory straw bedding for pigs, as Animal Welfare Minister Rauch says, and after a correspondingly short transition period. Anyone who is concerned about sales of Austrian pork should support the switch and make it mandatory Origin and husbandry labeling enter. Then the VGT will pull out all the stops to force imports of pork from completely slatted farming out of the market!”
