“AMOORE MIO”: Let’s protect our wetlands!

– Environmental umbrella organization welcomes the start of the “AMooRe” project and appeals: Wetlands are climate savers and must be protected at all costs

Peatlands and other wetlands are active climate savers because they can store around ten times more carbon dioxide (CO2) than forests. Above all, they are unique habitats for a variety of plants and animals.

Franz Maier, President of the environmental umbrella organization

Vienna (OTS) On the occasion of International Wetlands Day on February 2nd, the EU-LIFE project “AMooRe – Austrian Moor Restoration” was launched today, which serves to implement the Moor Strategy 2030+ and is jointly supported by the BMK, BML, all nine federal states as well as the University of Vienna and the Uni Kiel is worn. This means that over 44 million euros will flow into the protection, revitalization and monitoring of peatlands over a period of ten years. “Peatlands and other wetlands are active climate savers because they can store around ten times more carbon dioxide (CO2) than forests. Above all, they are unique habitats for a variety of plants and animals. But these ecosystems are severely threatened: 90 percent of Austria’s natural moor areas have already disappeared because they had to make way for pasture, traffic and settlement areas. “Dry moors release CO2 instead of storing it,” he said Franz MaierPresident of the environmental umbrella organization.

It is therefore necessary to protect these important natural areas and thus contain the climate and biodiversity crisis by implementing the Austrian Moor Strategy, the Nature Restoration Law, but also the still outstanding soil protection strategy. “Not least in order to achieve Austria’s climate goals, those responsible for politics must finally take soil protection seriously and make the net zero target binding from 2030. This means that at this point in time, further land use is only possible if areas are renatured and unsealed to the same extent at the same time,” appeals Maier.
