The car is the most popular travel agent of the Austrians, as an ARBÖ online survey showed 200 participants. According to this, around 45 percent of the respondents will go on vacation with their own car and head for popular travel destinations in Europe. Our neighboring countries are particularly popular. Germany, Italy and Croatia again lead the list of the most popular travel countries.
Whether city trip to Munich, beach holiday on Adriatic or cultural enjoyment in Tuscany – the proximity, diversity and good accessibility make these destinations the first choice. “In order to avoid unpleasant surprises in the form of fines during or after the well-deserved vacation trip, one should be aware that some legal regulations are not valid abroad in Austria,” said the head of the ArbÖ legal department in Johann Kopinits.
The following regulations are not recognized abroad:
Four -month overdraft period
In Austria, the §57a assessment of motor vehicles may be covered by up to four months. However, this exemption is unknown in most European and non -European countries – there the time of assessment must not be exceeded. Therefore, it should be checked before the start of the trip whether the validity of the §57a badge covers the entire travel period.
Red license plate for wheel and rear carriers
In Austria, the red license plates for wheel and rear carriers are popular, as this eliminates the constant converting of the license plates. The red license plates are not recognized everywhere abroad.
Digital driver’s license and digital admission certificate
The digital driver’s license and the digital registration certificate are only permitted in Austria and only serve as evidence of traffic controls in Austria. In European and non-European countries, the analogous paper or check card driver’s license is valid as driving authorization and approval.
Code 111
With the “Code 111” entered in the driver’s license, in Austria you are entitled to steer motorcycles up to 125 ccm and an output of up to 11 kW. However, this driving authorization is only recognized by a few countries:
- Italy: validity without restriction
- Latvia: validity without restriction
- Portugal: Validity is given from the age of 25
- Czech Republic: Valid only for vehicles with automatic transmission
- Spain: valid after at least 3 years of ownership of steering authorization class B
L17 driver’s license
Training trips as part of the L17 driving license training must be completed in Austria. Therefore, the vacation trip abroad is only recognized as a training trip up to the Austrian border.
Even after the end of the training, the use of the driver’s license abroad is limited: outside of Austria, the L17 steering authorization until the 18th birthday is only recognized in Germany, the United Kingdom and Denmark.
Driving license class on (moped driver’s license)
The class of the class on the (moped driving license) applies until the age of 16 only in Austria and Germany. In all other countries, the minimum age for steering mopeds and moped cars is 16 years.
Before the start of the trip, vacationers should find out about the local regulations so that there are no unpleasant surprises. “Especially in the very popular southern holiday countries such as Croatia, Slovenia or Italy, traffic punishments are often rigorously punished, often only months or even years later. Therefore, tourists should pay attention to applicable legal regulations in the respective holiday country and also inform in advance.
