The experts: Inside the Center for Energy at the AIT Austrian Institute of Technology, in the first week of 2025, two leading international trade fairs were represented: from May 6th to 8th at PCIM Europe in Nuremberg and from 7 to May 9th at Intersolar Europe in Munich.
Friederich Kupzog, head of the Center for Energy: “With its scientific excellence and high -quality and specific laboratory infrastructure, the AIT Center for Energy offers its customers: inside and partners: Interior and application -related research services. With our focus on power electronics and future -oriented energy systems, we set standards in international applied research. Our strong presence on the Intersolar Europe and the PCIM underlines the AIT innovative strength and our claim to significantly shape central technologies for the energy transition. ”
PCIM – international leading fair for power electronics
At PCIM Europe, the AIT presents the latest research results and practical technological developments in the areas of power electronics, intelligent drive systems and modern energy management. The AIT is intensively researching the development and optimization of power electronics for electromobility and electrical energy supply. Using advanced semiconductor materials such as silicon carbide (SIC) and gallium nitride (GAN), components with the highest efficiency and performance density are developed, which leads to lower costs. This also includes the development of innovative regulatory algorithms in the software.
In Hall 7, as of 407, visitors can expect: Hardware-in-the-loop-test environments for analyzing network-coupled power electronic systems, powerful SIC inverter with maximum efficiency for modern energy applications or GAN-based prototypes for the next evolutionary level of electrical drive systems. A highlight will be the recently awarded Medusa project (sustainable multi-megawatts of quick charging on the medium-voltage network) with the Houska Prize 2025. The future-oriented project deals with the development of multi-megawatt fast charging stations with direct connection to the medium-voltage network in combination with efficient and sustainable energy supply. This technology is crucial to make electromobility economically future -proof. Previous charging stations need around 4.5 hours to charge a typical 400 kWh bus battery. Medusa reduces this time to just eight minutes. In addition, medium voltage technology is a key to the global electrification of heavy traffic.
