“Fly. Freedom. Enthusiasm”: Under this motto, the Austrian Armed Forces are organizing AIRPOWER24, the largest air show in Europe, on Friday, September 6th, 2024, and Saturday, September 7th, 2024, together with the state of Styria and Red Bull as partners at Hinterstoisser Air Base in Zeltweg. It will consist of a performance show on the ground, as well as demonstrations by the Austrian Air Force and international military aerobatic teams and participants from the field of civil aviation, especially the Flying Bulls, as well as a static show by civilian exhibitors from the areas of the aviation industry, research and teaching and an extensive supporting event on the airfield grounds including the military aviation museum. Admission to AIRPOWER24 is free.
“In military terms, AIRPOWER24, in addition to the large-scale protective shield exercise that has already been carried out in June 2024, is not only the largest exercise by the Federal Army in 2024, but is actually a real operation. Our team has been preparing this event for over a year, we are looking forward to two exciting days of events here in Zeltweg!” says Major General Gerfried Promberger, overall responsible for AIRPOWER24. “AIRPOWER24 is an event that is prepared and carried out by almost all areas of the Austrian Armed Forces and the central office. The Styrian Military Command is responsible for the civil-military cooperation with the emergency services organizations and the district administrative authorities as well as the event permits. For the approximately 3,500 soldiers deployed, over 2,200 of them from the land forces alone, including 780 from the militia, the AIRPOWER24 represents a high training value!” says Major General Martin Dorfer, commander of the Austrian land forces and special operations forces.
“This year, AIRPOWER24 offers a program of unprecedented depth with numerous highlights and premieres. According to current planning, a total of 206 aircraft from over 20 nations will be on display at AIRPOWER24. Around 60 aircraft will be presented in the static display. The Austrian Armed Forces will be present at AIRPOWER24 with over 40 aircraft, The Flying Bulls with 27 aircraft,” explains Display Director Thomas Ploder. AUA Dreamliner and world premiere in the area of sustainability at AIRPOWER24
And in addition to the highlights of AIRPOWER24 that have already been communicated, there are also two “latest news”, namely an overflight of the new Dreamliner B787-9 from Austrian Airlines on Saturday and a world premiere in the area of sustainability on both days of the event: Leopold, the former Prince of Bavaria, will become BMW DTM pilot, with his historic BMW 3.0 CSL from 1971, together with Red Bull Air Race world champion Matthias Dolderer in a Swift TEMCO from 1947, will compete in a first and unique demonstration: both the first racing car with wings (Batmobile) as well as the aircraft are operated with almost climate-neutral e-fuel.
Preparations are being completed as scheduled.
The construction and facilities at Hinterstoisser Air Base are also running according to plan and will be finally completed on Wednesday. “AIRPOWER24 generates over ten million euros in added value for Styria and especially for the Murtal region. Restaurants and accommodation providers primarily benefit from visitors to the region. The entire district is almost fully booked at the weekend. And we try to outsource everything regionally. The Murau brewery, for example, is AIRPOWER’s exclusive beer supplier, and the catering and food also comes 100 percent from the region,” explains the AIRPOWER24 project manager, Brigadier Wolfgang Prieler, in conclusion.
