Aid organization: New care package from the federal government closes painful gaps

Expansion of the nursing scholarship, competence center for training abroad, more authority for home help, financial support for alternative care are necessary measures

Overall a very positive package

Elisabeth Anselm, Managing Director of the Austrian Relief Organization

Vienna (OTS) Today, on May 29, 2024, Federal Minister Rauch and club chairman Wöginger presented a new package of measures from the federal government for care and support. From the aid organization’s perspective, it includes correct and important decisions that have been requested many times, including by the aid organization. According to the aid organization, the package helps to make it easier to enter the nursing profession, to make the career field of home help more attractive and to better support caring relatives.

From September 2024, career changers who complete their health and nursing training at a university will also receive the nursing scholarship. “This is a very important step, because after the last nursing reform packages we still had a painful gap in the area of training,” says Elisabeth AnselmManaging Director of the Austrian Relief Organization.

“We see another urgent step – and one we have repeatedly warned about – in the planned competence center for nostrification procedures. Because the way the recruitment of urgently needed nursing staff from third countries is currently going – with bureaucratic and financial hurdles that are difficult to overcome individually – we will be at a disadvantage when it comes to well-trained nursing staff compared to countries that act in a planned manner, such as Switzerland and the Scandinavian countries,” explains Anselm.

In the future, the skills of home helpers will be expanded to include activities such as measuring blood pressure or administering eye and ear drops. “The career profile of home help is being upgraded, meaning that other nursing professions can focus more on their core competencies,” says Anselm.

Finally, the aid organization welcomes the financial support for caring relatives provided for in the federal government’s package by promoting alternative care from day one and the intention to create more transparency in 24-hour care. “Overall a very positive package“, concludes Anselm.
