The current evaluation of the advertisements for alcohol and drug influence in road traffic in Austria shows a positive development for the first half of 2025. The positive trend continues with the alcohol core. The number of advertisements for alcohol at the wheel dropped to 13,662 in the first half of 2025 – this corresponds to a decline of 2.1 percent compared to the comparison period of the previous year (first half of 2024: 13,951). A decline was recorded in 2024: with 28,867 advertisements, 5.9 percent fewer violations were registered than in 2023 (30,683 display).
There is a slight increase in drug drivers in the first half of 2025 – 4,295 advertisements were reimbursed – a slight increase of 0.3 percent compared to the first half of 2024 (4,283 display). There is even a decline for the entire year 2024: With 8,227 ads, the number of drugstores was 5.2 percent below the level of 2023 (8,676 display).
“Protecting people is the mandate of the police. Therefore, drug and alcohol drivers, but also life-threatening racers, are consistently pulled out of circulation- that is the goal of the control measures,” emphasized Interior Minister Gerhard Karner.
Focus and high advertising numbers
Through priorities with doctors and the possibility of determining drug impairment on site, the ads have increased eight times for drug impairment when steering in the past ten years. The focus is particularly relevant in the environment of events or concerts, but also in the course of plan squares.
Training of police officers
In addition to ongoing traffic monitoring in the course of the patrol service and targeted controls, prevention and awareness formation are essential factors to prevent accidents. The Ministry of the Interior has therefore been relating to intensive training measures by police officers for the recognition of symptoms of impairment through wing.
In addition, the collaboration with official doctors was intensified in the event of priorities and the technical review options have been improved.
