After Christmas is before New Year’s Eve: Viennese New Year’s market stalls from December 27th. Open for lucky charms and the like

At around 200 locations in all 23 districts, all of your errands for the upcoming New Year can be done at the New Year’s market stalls.

Vienna (OTS) During the Christmas holidays, even in the federal capital Vienna, there is a bit of calm before the turn of the year is just around the corner. Many shops are closed. The Viennese market stalls are the traditional exception here: the Christmas markets are followed by the New Year’s stalls from December 27th. From December 27th to 31st, you can buy everything you need for a happy new year from lucky charms and joke items to New Year’s Eve decorations at the stalls.

Around 200 locations in all districts of Vienna

The New Year’s Eve stands are probably known to everyone in Vienna who walks through their district between the holidays. At this time they are part of the cityscape like the Christmas tree is to Christmas. In total, lucky charms and the like are offered at 196 locations in Vienna. Nobody has to travel long distances to do this – New Year’s market stalls can be found in each of the capital’s 23 districts.

When it comes to lucky charms, lucky pigs, chimney sweeps, horseshoes and fly agarics are traditionally very popular this year. The variety of symbols of good luck has expanded over the years, reports Wilfried Stöger, committee member of the state market committee in the Vienna Chamber of Commerce. “In addition to the well-known motifs, unicorns, gnomes and elves are particularly popular with younger generations. Our older customers continue to buy pork chops, chimney sweeps, horseshoes and clovers.”

Known to the general public as New Year’s Eve stalls, they are regulated as occasional markets in the Vienna market regulations. Places are allocated annually and interest remains unbroken. The custom goes back to ancient Rome – back then people gave each other gifts of coins or sweets around the turn of the year. In Vienna, many of the stands have long been traditional businesses themselves. “Many people have been running their stands for decades, the New Year’s Eve stands are a fixture during the holidays for Viennese,” explains Viennese market trade chairman Markus Hanzl.

After shopping, it’s time for culinary delights

After enjoying the wide range of offerings at the stands, there are five locations where you can fortify yourself: Five New Year’s markets invite you to linger and stroll around with a variety of gastro offerings and New Year’s Eve delicacies. With the New Year’s Eve Market Vienna 1 and the Kuk New Year’s Market, the Inner City offers two celebration options. In Favoriten there are 10 and 15 stalls in the pedestrian zone at the New Year’s market. With a total of 70 stalls, the largest New Year’s market is located in the courtyard in front of Schönbrunn Palace. In the north of Vienna, New Year’s Eve and the time before can be spent at New Year’s Market 21 on Floridsdorf’s Franz-Jonas-Platz.
