Action against religious hatred: Kilometer-long strip of corn as a unifying symbol

Action against religious hatred: Kilometer-long strip of corn as a unifying symbol

Due to recent events, a civil society statement against hatred and incitement was made in Vienna.

Vienna (OTS) The polarization and incitement fueled by the media and politics is also making ever greater waves in Austria, as was seen with the unspeakable anti-Semitic graffiti on Jewish shops in Vienna.

The communications agency Heimat Wien from the 2nd district countered this situation with a civil society statement. She took up the old local custom of the May line, in which the houses of lovers are connected with a white line on the night of May 1st. Now a several kilometer long white line connects the city temple, the Islamic center and St. Stephen’s Cathedral and is intended to show: There is more that connects us than separates us.

“Unfortunately, the term home is often used to divide people. We think home is for everyone. Home is what connects us all. No matter where you were born or what religion you have. In this context, we wanted to make a statement with the reinterpretation of the old local tradition of Maistrich. Of course we are aware that we are not changing the world by doing this. “But we think it’s important to spread positive, unifying news in these polarized times, when one horror story follows the next,” says Heimat Wien founder Markus Wieser.

“Our agency is located in the middle of the second district and we see every day how people of all religions live peacefully together here. That’s why we were particularly shocked by the terrible anti-Semitism of the last few days. As an agency, our job is to connect. And as part of civil society, we also do this beyond a commercial background – by making visible what connects the Abrahamic religions,” says creative director Alex Hofmann.

The Heimat Wien campaign is already causing passionate discussions on social media, in which Matthias Bayr, CEO of ERNA Productions, is also happy to take part: “We are proud to support and accompany the campaign. As a film production company, we are used to focusing the lens on what matters. And that has never been more important than now.”
