Vienna (OTS) – “… and the Oscar goes to…”: On March 10, 2024, the film world will once again look to Los Angeles, where the coveted Academy Awards will be presented for the 96th time this year. The ORF is putting together an extensive program package: around the live Oscar night on ORF 1 – with Lillian Moschen and Alexander Horwath; including live broadcasts to Christian Konrad in Los Angeles – Oscar-winning feature films, documentaries and artist portraits are on the program on ORF 1, ORF 2, ORF III and 3sat. Among other things “kulturMontag”, the ORF radios Ö1, Ö3 and FM 4 as well as the ORF.at network and ORF TELETEXT report on the award ceremony.
Oscar night on March 10th in detail:
To get you in the mood for the long live Oscar night, ORF 1 will show the film comedy “Kings of Hollywood” with Tommy Lee Jones, Zach Braff and Oscar favorite Robert De Niro at 8:15 p.m. The latter will then be the focus of the artist portrait “Robert De Niro – the man behind the global star” by Jean-Baptiste Péretié at 9:55 p.m. The director takes a look behind the Hollywood facade of the exceptional artist and two-time Oscar winner, who has a chance of winning another trophy for “Best Supporting Actor” this year for his role in Martin Scorsese’s western epic “Killers of the Flower Moon”.
OSCARS – The Night 2024 – The Favorites (10:50 p.m.)
It will be exciting again when the Academy Awards are presented in the form of the most famous trophies in the world – the “Oscars” covered in 24-carat gold. This year the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles is once again the venue for the glamorous gala, which appears in a different light after the strikes by the screenwriters and the actors’ guild. What impact do the months-long double strikes over the use of artificial intelligence have on the Hollywood dream factory? Are screenwriters’ fears of becoming superfluous due to new technologies really over the table or will AI continue to cause excitement in the film world? In the run-up to the glamorous Oscar night, ORF presenter Lillian Moschen and film expert Alexander Horwath explore exciting questions like these and present the most important films from this year’s awards ceremony: the atomic bomb drama “Oppenheimer” by director Christopher Nolan is at the top with 13 nominations, followed by Giorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” with eleven and Martin Scorsese’s “Killers of the Flower Moon” with ten nominations.
“Barbie” – the highest-grossing film of the year – is in the top league with eight nominations, although Greta Gerwig did not receive a nomination as a director – which caused outrage and heated debate and even brought former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton into the spotlight.
Lillian Moschen and Alexander Horwath lead the night and analyze the Academy’s decisions in the run-up to the big gala. ORF film department head Christian Konrad reports live from the red carpet in the Dolby Theater. In a report he examines, among other things, the question of what effects world events and international politics have on actors. Comments on trouble spots spark discussions online and the tone becomes harsher. Because of her anti-Semitic statements about the Middle East conflict, Oscar winner Susan Sarandon had to justify herself and her agency separated from her.
OSCARS – The Night 2024 – Red Carpet (11.30 p.m.)
Seeing and being seen – that’s what the red carpet in front of the Dolby Theater is all about. Numerous Hollywood stars are also expected at the 96th Oscar night, and you can look forward to lots of haute couture and humorous interviews. ORF 1 broadcasts live from the red carpet.
OSCARS – The Night 2024 – The Show (0.00 a.m.)
At midnight the hour strikes for great hopes or bitter disappointments. US star presenter Jimmy Kimmel will host the glamorous hour-long show for the fourth time. In the ORF studio, Lillian Moschen and Alexander Horwath comment on and analyze the decisions of the members of the US Film Academy. This year the prizes will be awarded in 23 categories. It will be interesting to see how often Kimmel will have to demonstrate his repartee this time, how much composure the losers will show, and how many tears the winners will show.

The Oscar supporting program on ORF 2
On ORF 2, the “matinee” on March 10th from 9:05 a.m. will also get you in the mood for Oscar night: In the documentary “Hope on the Road: Daniel Hope in Search of the Hollywood Sound,” the Irish violinist and presenter sets out the search for the world-famous sound of Hollywood. In LA he follows the route of many Jewish artists who fled the Nazis after the start of the Second World War and who had a decisive influence on the development of the dream factory and the musical language of cinema in their new home. Afterwards, the artist portrait “Hollywood’s dream dancer – Ginger Rogers” (10 a.m.) commemorates the dancing whirlwind – an icon of old Hollywood who is unforgotten thanks to her numerous films and her legendary dance scenes with Fred Astaire.
The day after the Oscars, on March 11th, “kulturMontag” at 10:30 p.m. on ORF 2 will bring a follow-up report on Oscar night, with an overview of the winners and best moments of the 96th Academy Awards. The documentary “Austria in Hollywood – Composing for the Dream Factory” (11:15 p.m.) by Barbara Weissenbeck then sheds light on a young generation of Austrian musicians who are continuing the work of the great pioneers of film music, such as Adam Lukas, Lily Marlovits and Paul Haslinger.
ORF III will focus on the events of Oscar night 2024 in a special edition of “Kultur Today” on March 11th.
The documentaries “Vienna in Hollywood – Pioneers of Film Music” (9.45 p.m.) and “Austria in Hollywood – Composing for the Dream Factory” (10.30 p.m.) are on the program on 3sat on March 16th. The feature film “Selma,” which won an Oscar for best film music in 2014, follows at 11:15 p.m.
