A success story: Three years of “Time in the Picture” on TikTok

On the third birthday of the @zeitimbild channel on TikTok, the ORF news editorial team takes stock of its success. A few weeks ago, “ZIB” cracked the 500,000 subscriber mark on TikTok. It is the most successful TikTok news channel in Austria. The hosts Ambra Schuster and Idan Hanin report daily in a platform-appropriate manner for a particularly young target group. They receive support from EU correspondent Verena Sophie Maier. Social media editorial director Irina Oberguggenberger sees success in the right choice of topics and journalistic narrative style. The team does an excellent job. She still wants to remain critical of the platform: “What is played out and how is decided by the platform’s algorithm – and not us. I think this is questionable in terms of democratic policy, but at the same time there is no alternative: this is the only way we can take our mission seriously, provide young people with public service content and be an ORF for everyone.”

Other interesting facts:

In the “election month” of September 2024 alone, “Zeit im Bild” reached 29 million views on TikTok.

74 percent of users are between 14 and 34 years old. By far the largest target group (44%) are 14 to 24 year olds.

Thematic highlights were the reporting on the EU and National Council elections – for example with interviews with the top candidates. The next highlight will be the reporting by Ambra Schuster from the USA on the US election.

The ZIB Instagram channel also celebrated its birthday on August 1st: after five years, it is still the largest news channel on Instagram in Austria with 1.1 million followers.
