On the occasion of the 85th birthday of Valie Export, the Belvedere 21, together with the Austrian Film Museum and Sixpackfilm on Wednesday, May 21, from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m., organizes a big festival for the internationally pioneering artist.
Stella Rollig, General Director of the Belvedere: Valie Export has significantly shaped the art of the 20th and 21st centuries. With her uncompromising attitude, her intellectual sharpness and her artistic radicalism, she has set new standards – not only in feminist art, but far beyond. On her 85th birthday I congratulate her from the heart on behalf of the entire Belvedere and I am pleased that we are allowed to honor Valie Export with this festival
.
Valie Export in Belvedere 21 is duly celebrated with artistic articles from the areas of film, performance, music and reading. International colleagues and the importance of Valie Export: Barbis Ruder, Denise Palmieri and Sophia Süß milk are devoted themselves to develop performative contributions that are in close dialogue with central works by Valie – from the Action pants genital panic about the Physical configurations up to Doppelganger. Inna Shevchenko reads a text that was created in the context of the work of her feminist artist group Femen.
The hosts also give the radical jubilee a subversive film program with cake: Larry Gottheim’s experimental serenade Harmonica (1971), Susan Mogul’s gift film Take Off (1974) as well as the recently rediscovered Eldorado I/III (1986) by Ursula Pürrer and Ashley Hans Scheirl. Two current feminist positions are with Guns (2023) by Natalia del Mar Kašik and Everyone Deserves a Slice of the Pie (2025) represented by Sasha Pirker. Valie Export takes with her expanded cinema work To+from+on+to – variation himself part in the program.
Musically, two artists frame the evening: Cherry Sunkist (Karin Fisslthaler) crosses their music and moving images in the foyer of Belvedere 21, and Farce invites the audience to the dance floor at the end of the evening.
The detailed program should be a surprise for the artist and the audience and is only listed once. Admission is free. Registration under belvedere.at/programm.
