A Christmas Miracle”: ORF 2 premiere with Devid Striesow and Verena Altenberger on December 18th

On Wednesday, December 18, 2024, the lavishly staged, historical event film “BACH – A Christmas Miracle” – a co-production of ORF, ARD Degeto, MDR and BR – with Devid Striesow and Verena Altenberger in the leading roles will tell the story at 8:15 p.m. on ORF 2 as well as the story of the world-famous composer genius from Tuesday, December 17th at 8:15 p.m. on ORF ON Johann Sebastian Bach, his love for his family and his most famous work, alongside the St. Matthew Passion, the Christmas Oratorio. Directed by Florian Baxmeyer and based on a script by Christian Schnalke, Devid Striesow’s son Ludwig Simon, who embodies Bach’s son Emanuel in the film, can be seen alongside Devid Striesow in the title role. Verena Altenberger takes on the part of Johann Sebastian’s wife Anna Magdalena Bach. Other roles include Dominic Marcus Singer, German von Beug, Lotta Herzog, Thorsten Merten, Christina Große, Victor Tahal, Daniel Christensen, Dominik Weber, Luise Aschenbrenner, Felix Hellmann and Christoph Luser. “BACH – A Christmas Miracle” was filmed from January to March 2024 in Greillenstein and Horn in Austria and in Weimar, Buttstädt and Merseburg in Germany.

The Thomanerchor Leipzig under the direction of the Thomas cantor Andreas Reize and the Thomas organist Johannes Lang were able to be won over for the film. They were supported instrumentally by harpsichordist Elina Albach and her ensemble Continuum. The specialist advice was in the hands of the musicologist Bernhard Schrammek. The composer and violinist Martina Eisenreich designed the film music.

Devid Striesow: “Feel very close to Bach”

Lead actor Devid Striesow describes his relationship with Johann Sebastian Bach with the following words: “Thanks to the extensive preparation, which also included conducting lessons, I was able to empathize very well with the character. Especially in the moments when the Christmas oratorio was performed and I was allowed to lead the orchestra and choir, I felt very close to Bach.” On the importance of classical music for him: “Classical music accompanies me my entire life. I attended concerts at a very early age and then started playing the violin myself. Music, and especially classical music, has always helped me a lot in difficult times.” He says about working with his son Ludwig Simon: “It’s a great experience because, at the moment of work, Ludwig is first and foremost a talented and professional colleague. It was definitely helpful for our playing constellation as father-son Bach that we could rely on our impulses blindly.”

Verena Altenberger: Anna Magdalena Bach “obviously a super woman”

Verena Altenberger says about preparing for her role: “After preparing with the help of musicologist Susanne Wosnitzka, I couldn’t believe how little knowledge about Anna Magdalena Bach has been transferred into our general knowledge. I myself knew far too little about this woman who was obviously a super woman. How else do you reconcile a career as a soloist, a partnership (with a not-so-difficult man), motherhood of 13 children and, you could probably call it, ‘managerial work’? It was very important to me to make these facets of Magdalena and her fascinating size visible during filming and I was supported with great creative openness by director Florian Baxmeyer and Bach himself – Devid Striesow. Let me also say: There are too few films about Anna Magdalena Bach!”

More about the content

The historical event family film tells of the creation of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Christmas oratorio in the days before Christmas Eve 1734. Screenwriter Christian Schnalke focuses on the approachable Bach, who fervently believes in telling believers the story of the birth of Jesus with music to be able to convey it more impressively than the word ever could. The name Bach not only stands for the brilliant patriarch, but also for his musical family. Alongside Devid Striesow in the role of the Leipzig cantor, Verena Altenberger plays the sought-after singer and wife Anna Magdalena Bach. A special tribute is given to Bach’s talented, adult son Emanuel – cast alongside Striesow’s son Ludwig Simon – who later achieved his father’s fame. The Bachs’ fight for artistic freedom against political and ecclesiastical tutelage symbolizes a new era of emancipatory awakening. The current significance of the cantor and organist Bach, who was soon almost forgotten after his death, goes back to his rediscovery under the auspices of the cult of genius in the 19th century. Since little is known about the creation of the compositions, screenwriter Christian Schnalke uses biographical blank spaces for his fictional view of the importance of the family for Bach’s life and work.

Leipzig, December 1734. The ambitious composer and cantor Johann Sebastian Bach (Devid Striesow), who was controversial among city leaders, wants to outdo himself with his Christmas mass: God’s word as a musical work of art! The powerful city councilor Stieglitz (Thorsten Merten) puts him in his place: Bach should not compose “operatic” music again. Bach dares to contradict the authorities in a dangerous way. He finds support in his wife, the talented singer Anna Magdalena Bach (Verena Altenberger), who wisely turns to Stieglitz’s wife Maria (Christina Große). Eight-year-old Elisabeth (Lotta Herzog) gets the Christmas tree on her own. The closer the performance gets, the more the composer needs the support of his family. But only when the patriarch trusts the talent of his son Emanuel (Ludwig Simon), whom he despises, does the ambitious work succeed. In order to perform the Christmas oratorio in St. Thomas Church, the Bachs now work day and night – until ten-year-old Gottfried (German von Beug) suddenly disappears without a trace.

“BACH – A Christmas Miracle” is a production by EIKON Media GmbH in co-production with EPO-Film, ARD Degeto, MDR, BR and ORF, funded by Mitteldeutsche Medienförder (MDM), FISA+ and RTR Medien.
