The Kenyan-Mexican actress and filmmaker Lupita Amondi Nyong’o will be jury president at the 74th Berlinale in February. The Berlin International Film Festival announced that she is one of the most prominent international actresses and inspires audiences and film critics alike. The jury decides on the award of the Golden and Silver Bear film awards.
The daughter of Kenyan parents, she was born in Mexico City and grew up in Kenya. Lupita Nyong’o studied film and theater studies at Hampshire College in the USA and then worked as an actress, producer, director and screenwriter. After further studies at the Yale School of Drama, she celebrated her breakthrough with Steve McQueen’s film drama “12 Years a Slave.” For the role of Patsey, she received the 2014 Oscar for Best Supporting Actress and four other awards.
Nyong’o then starred in the Marvel films “Black Panther” and “Star Wars,” among others. She is also active on Broadway stages and wrote the children’s book bestseller “Sulwe” in 2020. She was recently executive producer of the Sudanese film “Goodbye Julia”. She will soon be taking on a role in the horror film “A Quiet Place: Day One”. She is currently working on a podcast about the African diaspora and a series based on Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s successful novel “Americanah”.
The previous Berlinale directors Mariette Rissenbeek and Carlo Chatrian praised Nyong’o for her versatility, her ability to address different target groups and “at the same time a consistency that is clearly visible in her roles, no matter how different they may be.” Nyong’o said she was deeply honored. »I look forward to celebrating and recognizing the outstanding work of filmmakers from around the world.«
