Discover the new Hohe Tauern National Park Worlds

Newly designed national park worlds will open in Mittersill on May 8, 2024

Mittersill (OTS) The Hohe Tauern National Park is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes on earth. The National Park Worlds in Mittersill have set themselves the goal of telling its history and stories. 17 years after its opening, the adventure exhibition has now been completely redesigned.
From May 8, 2024, visitors can expect a newly designed exhibition on three thematic levels in the form of ten experience worlds in which knowledge transfer, interactivity, sensory experience and the joy of playing go hand in hand. Impressive exhibits, spatial installations, 3D films and exciting stories stimulate the desire to discover nature for yourself, but also reveal fascinating places and eras long past.

The “National Park Worlds” exhibition in the Hohe Tauern National Park Center in Mittersill, which has existed since 2007, is one of the most popular indoor excursion destinations in SalzburgerLand. Around 80,000 visitors every year find an exciting alpine experience in the Hohe Tauern National Park on 1,800 m2. This exhibition is not only a popular local attraction, but also a high-level tourist infrastructure for the entire region. The exhibition is also the calling card or flagship of the Hohe Tauern National Park. Knowledge about the fascinating natural landscapes of the country’s oldest and largest national park is conveyed to visitors in a playful way. Visitors get to know and understand the extraordinary diversity of the national park while hiking through the ten natural areas.

A successful symbiosis of the tried and tested and completely new

After the expansion of the national park center to include the spectacular 360° panoramic cinema in 2013, the redesign has now set another tourism milestone in terms of attraction, knowledge transfer and visitor friendliness after ten years. New interactive stations and exciting attractions expand the existing offering. At the same time, service optimization will also take place in the areas of gastronomy, infrastructure and visitor guidance so that visitors can experience their stay in the national park center even more intensively.

From the past to the present to the future

High up – in the airy summit regions of the Großglockner (3,798 m) and the Großvenediger (3,657 m) – the journey through the newly designed national park worlds in Mittersill begins. Even the first world with the title “Eagle Flight Panorama” makes the dimension and fascination of the Hohe Tauern National Park clear. Visitors literally fly over the mountains, glaciers, alpine pastures, lakes, streams and forests of the protected area from a bird’s eye view using impressive films, and then immediately dig underground: In good Pinzgauer style, “Oiche” goes into the “world of marmots & co” , where a walk-in marmot burrow and a film designed as a “graphic novel” illustrate the habitat of the alpine survival artists in the rock.

The national park worlds have been made fit for the future through their redesign: tried-and-tested visitor favorites such as the 360° panoramic cinema have remained unchanged, well-known worlds such as “Mythos Bergwald” or “Almsommer” have been revised in terms of content and design and surprise with a “ceiling cinema” in which visitors can see the Lying down and watching the film “In the Rhythm of the Forest” from the ground up to the treetops. Haptic, visual and auditory sensory impressions enable a deeper understanding of the available information. At the end of the exhibition, an “escape game” leads to the Alm, a place of longing. An immersive experience that gives visitors a low-threshold understanding of the Alm as an essential part of the region and the national park. During their tour through the national park worlds, visitors are clearly shown what the Hohe Tauern National Park currently looks like, how it came into being and how it has changed over millions of years and how humans have an influence.

Visitors become “national park world time travelers”

The national park worlds stimulate the desire to discover the fascinating natural landscape of the Hohe Tauern for yourself. But they also enable visitors to travel with all their senses to places, eras and areas that would otherwise be inaccessible to people. The new “Gallery of Life”, for example, leads into the Untersulzbachtal wilderness area and provides magnificent insights into this untouched piece of earth where there is no cultivation: wonderful images stimulate the imagination, river gravel and a rock slab with a mosaic of centuries-old lichens have the journey from the wild into the exhibition. In the “Glacier World” a 6,000-year-old pine slice refers to the nature of the Pasterzen glacier in the Neolithic period and the replica of a marine dinosaur in the world “Peaks from the Seabed” shows that 150 million years ago there was a tropical sea in the Hohe Tauern area located. The “Glacier Friendship Book” presents leading glacier experts and their research. The “Water Kingdom” refers to the region’s wealth of water with its 500 mountain lakes, 800 moors and streams – an impressive, oversized spatial installation takes visitors on the journey of a drop of water through the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Comments on the reopening

The new national park worlds in Mittersill are not only a tourist milestone of the highest quality, but also a living testimony to our connection with nature. They invite visitors to engage, learn and enjoy. I am convinced that this will be a place of inspiration that will motivate us to protect and preserve our original landscape“, affirmed State Governor Wilfried Haslauer.

Deputy State Governor Stefan Schnöll: The Hohe Tauern National Park Worlds are a “hotspot” for locals and tourists at any time of the year. The entire region benefits from this offer and the result after the renovation is more than impressive – congratulations. The natural treasures of the national park are reflected even more impressively in the new exhibition. At the same time, the natural impressions are also a mandate for all of us to look at nature and to give sustainability a prominent consideration in all future projects, so that we can continue to experience these images in the future.

The best way to experience nature is in nature. The national park worlds also allow you to take a look at more than just the uniqueness of this natural landscape. They give you an insight into the historical development of this region and the opportunity to discover places that are inaccessible to humans. The diversity makes our national park so unique and with the national park worlds we create additional added value for our visitors“, is State Councilor Josef Schwaiger convinced.

On the occasion of the reopening of the Hohe Tauern National Park Worlds Michael Obermoser, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Holiday Region Hohe Tauern National Park with the question: How can the beauties of Europe’s largest nature reserve, the Hohe Tauern National Park, be brought closer to the general public? His answer is as complex as it is simple. The people in the national park region have the task and obligations of preserving the beauty and uniqueness of the Hohe Tauern for future generations. Many people can enjoy these natural experiences ‘live’ on site in the national park. For those who are not familiar with this experience, the new national park worlds enable locals and guests alike to hear, feel and enjoy this natural spectacle again and again – at any time of the year – in the national park center.

The ten spectacular national park worlds captivate visitors of all ages in very different ways, but always with the aim of emotionality and holistic nature“, explained Roland RauchManaging Director of the Hohe Tauern National Park holiday region, presented the new exhibition concept. “The ‘water kingdom’ and the ‘glacier world’ have a very special meaning in the national park worlds: both the water and the glacier tell a very current story of resource wealth, climate change and the human influence.”

Andreas Zangl and his team have succeeded brilliantly in conceiving a highly aesthetic and well-founded presentation that appeals to both the mind and the heart. “Anyone who has hiked through the national park worlds will look at the world outside with different eyes. Our aim is to present the uniqueness and beauty of the largest protected area in the Alps in a contemporary way and to impart up-to-date specialist knowledge. This exhibition consists of a thousand details and you have to take them literally. Dozens of passionate people, from the client to the planning team and all the executing trades, worked on the creation of the newly designed national park worlds. The challenge was to combine both these details and the unparalleled commitment of everyone involved into a larger whole without losing the ease in perceiving this complexity. I think we have really succeeded in this“, says Andreas Zangl.
