MONOCOLOR. SCREEN—SPACE | State Gallery of Lower Austria, May 3rd, 2024

First museum exhibition of the young media artist MONOCOLOR

Krems (OTS) With MONOCOLOR alias Marian Essl (*1993), a young media artist from Lower Austria is entering the museum stage for the first time. His image worlds, created entirely algorithmically, move between fluid forms and geometric-architectural structures. His audiovisual installations and performances have been presented at numerous renowned international institutions and festivals in Canada, Japan, Korea and Europe. SCREEN—SPACE created MONOCOLOR specifically for the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich.

“The Lower Austria State Gallery is a stage for local artists and young talents. With MONOCOLOR we present a Lower Austrian artist of the younger generation and current representative of experimental media art.”emphasizes Gerda Ridler, artistic director of the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich.

“MONOCOLOR’s performances have already been seen at festivals worldwide. SCREEN—SPACE is his first presentation in a museum setting, in which he cleverly captures the architectural features of the Landesgalerie Niederösterreich. Visitors are invited to a physical and sensory exhibition experience.”explains curator Klaus Krobath, head of AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria.

Immerse yourself in virtual worlds

For many people, immersing themselves in virtual worlds has now become an integral part of their reality. In this context, MONOCOLOR presents his work SCREEN—SPACE. The image and sound landscapes he creates are based on complex algorithms. The artist develops generative processes that produce both sonic and visual results. It is particularly important to him that these worlds are perceived as real and physically tangible.

SCREEN—SPACE

With the exhibition SCREEN—SPACE, MONOCOLOR depicts the transition of image and sound into space. The work consists of two parts: a large-format individual projection with stereo sound and a full-surface 360-degree projection with spatial sound. The projections record the museum architecture and simultaneously make it disappear through a virtual world of constantly changing visual and sound structures. In the expansive work, visitors are completely surrounded by a constantly changing cloud of image and sound.

Cooperation with AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria

The exhibition SCREEN – SPACE was realized in cooperation with the international exchange program AIR – ARTIST IN RESIDENCE Lower Austria. MONOCOLOR will receive a scholarship to participate in the Djerassi Resident Artists Program in Woodside, California in 2024.
