May 1st: SPÖ fights for fair working conditions

LH Kaiser at May 1st celebrations in Carinthia: Against extension of working hours, for fair pensions and millionaires’ tax – with the SPÖ for more justice.

Völkermarkt/Klagenfurt (OTS) “Celebrate, remember and keep fighting!” SPÖ state party chairman LH Peter Kaiser issued this slogan today on May 1st, Labor Day. Whether by bicycle, car, motorcycle, tractor or other vehicle – hundreds of “star riders” made the pilgrimage to Völkermarkt again today on May 1st for the traditional family festival of the SPÖ and ARBÖ. After the big reception and the children’s bicycle race at the sports field, the guests in a good mood went to the covered sports center. Mayor Markus Lakounigg was pleased to welcome numerous other guests of honor alongside the SPÖ state party chairman, Governor Peter Kaiser. Among them are district party chairman LAbg. Hermann Srienz, the third state parliament president Andreas Scherwitzl, state parliament member Manuela Lobnik, district EU candidate Sabrina Winter, numerous mayors of neighboring communities, many local councilors and party officials.

In his celebratory speech, LH Kaiser remembered May 1st as a symbol of the tireless commitment of the SPÖ, which emerged from a workers’ movement, for working people, for their passionate commitment and for social democratic achievements that, like democracy, have become self-evident. “Labor Day, May 1st, is more important today than ever – because one thing is clear: the digitalized, globalized world of work is constantly presenting us with new challenges,” emphasized the state governor. The commitment to the people must be continued both at the regional and national level, but also at the international EU level – Kaiser also addressed the upcoming National Council elections and the EU elections. According to Kaiser, a strong social democracy that opposes even greater exploitation in the form of an extension of working hours recently demanded by lobbyists and interest groups and clearly advocates for fairer pensions and the long-overdue millionaires’ tax is crucial because it represents the interests of women workers and workers as well as for the trade unions and creates a policy based on justice and solidarity. “We, the SPÖ, Andi Babler and I, Markus Lakounigg, Manuela Lobnik, Hermann Srienz, Claudia Arpa and Philip Kucher – all of us together, as the SPÖ family, fight for more justice – we are the mouthpiece for more than 2/3 of the people Population who want more fairness in contributions,” Kaiser also writes in his blog, which is available at https://kaiser-peter.at/post/blog-zum-1-mai-2024/ has been online since yesterday.

In his speech, he also called for people to make use of their right to vote, both in the National Council and in the EU elections. For him it is clear that a stable, social-democratically led Austrian government and an even stronger EU are needed in order to be able to overcome the growing challenges – but above all there needs to be representatives in the committees who are on behalf of the people of Carinthia and address their concerns.

Wolfgang Stefitz and his team provided catering for the guests. The event was accompanied musically by “Tip Top”. The youngest guests were able to prove themselves at an EU rally.

The May 1st celebration also started at 10 a.m. in Klagenfurt on the Kreuzberglwiese. In the afternoon, LH Kaiser welcomed the numerous visitors who came to celebrate Labor Day together.

“The first of May is a good day to remember and show what we stand for,” said Kaiser: “Celebrate, remember and keep fighting!”
