May 12th is Mother’s Day – according to flower shops, regional plants in pastel tones are particularly popular this year
Vienna (OTS) – Mother’s Day has been celebrated in Austria on the second Sunday in May since 1924; this year it is May 12th. Flowers are considered the most popular gift and for good reason: “On Mother’s Day, there is probably no better language to show your emotions than with flowers. Because as a gesture of appreciation, they convey positive feelings and are probably the most beautiful symbol for expressing your connection with a person,” says Johann Obendrauf, President of the Austrian Flower Office. “Our specialist flower shops advise you to ensure that the floral gift really meets the customer’s wishes, including care tips. And they can count on receiving regional products with the highest level of craftsmanship.”
Around Mother’s Day, for example, peonies, roses, levkojen, snapdragons, lilacs, hydrangeas, phlox, lisianthus, carnations and poppies are already in season. Together with fresh flower branches and leaves, they create a natural arrangement that is guaranteed to be an eye-catcher.
The classics for Mother’s Day: roses and hydrangeas
Roses and peonies, which are usually decorated with fine accessories and romantic flowers, are considered Mother’s Day classics. This year, pastel tones can also be used, says Obendrauf: “Early summer bouquets are also in trend, primarily in a playful floral design or in the form of arrangements and as room and table decorations.” When it comes to potted plants, the hydrangea is a popular Mother’s Day gift. For garden lovers, Obendrauf recommends rose bushes, pelargoniums, gardenias or fuchsias, which are available in many color variations.
The color trends for 2024
The most important colors for this year include “Sky Blue”, a soft sky blue, and “Bright White”, a radiant white. They stand for creativity and openness. Pastel yellow, magenta, sage, strong orange tones, soft earthy nuances and pastel blue are also popular. In addition, a trend color is chosen every year by the Pantone Color Institute. In 2024 this is the velvety, fresh peach tone “Peach Fuzz”.
Regionality and sustainability in focus
Sustainability and regionality have become increasingly important for years. “The use of local flowers and plants as well as natural materials that are recyclable or degradable has now become the standard and our customers pay great attention to where the flowers and plants they buy come from,” said the President of the Flower Office. – A development that is welcomed by florists, as careful treatment of nature is particularly important to them. “In general, we attach great importance to ensuring that our products meet the three pillars of sustainability, i.e. ecology, economy and social issues,” says Obendrauf.
