Media Camp 2024: Around 500 young talents on their way to journalism (PHOTO)

Berlin (ots) When Bahn boss Richard Lutz, “Zeit Online” editor Yasmine M’Barek and “Tagesschau” presenter Amelie Marie Weber meet young talent: Over 500 people came together this Friday at the media camp in the Kulturbrauerei to talk about getting started to discuss in journalism. Around 80 percent of the participants are studying, doing a traineeship or doing a traineeship. Panels, workshops and ask-me-anything sessions are all about getting started in the industry. At the start, Yasmine M’Barek, Amelie Marie Weber, Kathrin Welsch and Tom Kölm spoke about the different paths into journalism.

“Otherwise I’ll just change industries.” Yasmine M’Barek not only approaches her own career path with this calmness, but also shows it in her job: for example, when the 25-year-old editor of “Zeit Online” speaks with the Chancellor for three quarters of an hour in the podcast. While M’Barek was at a dual journalism school and focused on niche knowledge, Amelie Marie Weber got into journalism through a traineeship. The editor and presenter at the “Tagesschau” spoke about the change in the industry and how you can get involved in shaping it. Your tip: Get in touch with people and network on LinkedIn. Most would respond kindly.

Tom Kölm, program director at Radio Fritz, found another way into the industry. As a working-class child, he taught himself radio editing at a young age and then applied to major media companies with his student radio samples. And that worked. Kathrin Welsch shows that studying psychology can also lead to the industry. The human resources manager at RTL 2 encouraged people to apply for a position even if not all requirements were met and to remain authentic in their application. The round was moderated by Frederik von Castell, editor-in-chief of “medium magazine”.

What do Deutsche Bahn and journalism have in common? The keynote speech by Richard Lutz, CEO of Deutsche Bahn, revolved around this question. Even if journalistic reporting can be uncomfortable and he is annoyed by one or two headlines, the company has to endure critical reporting because it is an essential part of democracy. He never dreamed that he would become a railway boss.

In addition, “Zeit Online” editor-in-chief Jochen Wegner, among others, answered questions from participants in an ask-me-anything session. And at the Young Leaders Forum, the media industry’s top young leaders, who were honored by “kress pro”, presented their practical cases. The media camp started the media tour the day before. Four media companies took a look behind the scenes. Around 200 young talents came together and looked behind the scenes at “The Pioneer”, “Tagesspiegel”, “Welt” and “Zeit Online”. Alev Dogan, deputy editor-in-chief of The Pioneer, explained live journalism on the media ship of Pioneer One. At the Tagesspiegel, Helena Wittlich gave insights into the Innovation Lab. Ronald Warin showed how the world’s newsroom works. And in the “Zeit Online” data editorial team, Julius Tröger explained how interactive data visualizations are created.

The media camp is organized by the media publisher Oberauer. Media partners are “medium magazin”, “kress pro”, “newsroom”, “Meedia”, “Wirtschaftsjournalist:in” and “Österreichs Journalist:in”. The event is supported by SAP, Deutsche Börse Group and Porsche. The next media camp will take place on April 11, 2025 in Berlin.
