Sima/Nevrivy: “Arena Beach” – new bathing spot with wow effect on the New Danube from mid-May | City vienna

Vacation for free: Kaisermühlenbucht is being transformed into a 1,100 m2 beach with a shallow water zone – 30 new trees on the shoreline

Vienna (OTS) The Danube Island and the banks of the New Danube are not only Vienna’s largest and most popular leisure oasis, they are also a true bathing paradise. 63 km of freely accessible riverside zone are available to the Viennese. The City of Vienna traditionally uses the months before the start of the bathing season to create additional, attractive and free offers directly on the water. This year the Viennese can expect another new highlight! “A spacious sandy beach is currently being built in Kaisermühlenbucht on the left Danube dam, the new Arena Beach, which is particularly suitable for families with children thanks to the shady trees and shallow water zone. While access to water bodies is being privatized in other federal states, we are opening up and making bank access more attractive and I am very pleased about the new offer here in a place that was previously not very attractive for swimming,” said Ulli Sima, the city councilor responsible for Vienna’s waters. Today she got an idea of the construction work currently underway with district head Ernst Nevrivy, which already gives an idea of the full dimensions of the new bathing paradise.

The 2024 swimming season can start at the new Arena Beach in mid-May. The CopaBeach, which has been completely renovated in recent years, and the Pirate Bay, which is a wonderful sandy beach suitable for families, are already ready to go. On the other side of the New Danube, the ‘Sunken City’ is currently being completely redesigned – with many consumption-free zones and sports facilities. “In addition to all of these offers, the current design of another bathing area on the Danube here at Arena Beach with free public access is great and certainly forms another attraction for families in the Danube city. “I would like to thank the initiative of city councilor Ulli Sima, who has been driving forward the redesign of the riverside areas here for years,” said district leader Ernst Nevrivy.

Coming soon: Sandy beach with shallow water zone and feel-good character

The Kaisermühlenbucht, affectionately known as the “Arena”, is located on the left bank of the New Danube downstream from the Kaisermühlen Bridge. The shape of the bay including the shore area is reminiscent of an amphitheater, but so far the location has seemed dusty and hardly used. With the new Arena Beach, Kaisermühlenbucht now has a completely new look. Soon it will be time to sunbathe, splash around and swim on 1,100 m2 of sandy beach!

“As part of the redesign work, the Kaisermühlenbucht will be filled with a total of 4,000 m3 of material. The sand is deliberately placed in the bay in such a way that a slight slope towards the New Danube is created. The result is a shallow water zone that will make it much easier for bathers to enter the water,” says Gerald Loew, head of the Vienna Waters department, looking forward to the imminent opening.

30 new trees for climate-friendly arena terraces

From the back of the Kaisermühlendamm, a total of 8 floors with a width of 2.40 meters lead down in stages to the new Arena Beach. These green “arena terraces” serve as comfortable seating and lying areas for bathers. The ongoing work on the new Arena Beach in Kaisermühlenbucht will also be used to further make the surrounding shore area more attractive. Thirty new trees provide additional shade along the terraces, including heat-tolerant field maples, olive willows and flower ash trees. The balustrade around the bay is planted with lush Virginia creeper.

Vacation for free: CopaBeach, Pirate Bay and Arena Beach

The soon-to-be-opened Arena Beach is the preliminary “grande finale” of a whole series of superbly designed shore sections along the New Danube. If you are looking for other free offers with a beach feeling right on the water, you will not only find what you are looking for at the new Arena Beach: The CopaBeach attracts with extensive green areas, large trees, a climbing park and sandy beaches. A colorful mix of modern, international gastronomy on the banks of the New Danube rounds off a visit. The Pirate Bay between the Vienna City Beach Club and the wakeboard lift also offers a spacious sandy beach and has numerous seating areas and shaded areas. The “Sunken City” on the New Danube is currently being completely redesigned – the first section will be completed before the summer.

Keep natural swimming areas clean!

The City of Vienna appeals to all visitors to keep the new sandy beach – like all natural swimming areas – clean and to help ensure that the leisure areas on the water in Vienna are left in such a way that everyone can enjoy them!
