Vienna (OTS) “ORF III Theme Monday” with a focus on DIY

In spring, do-it-yourselfers also wake up from hibernation and flock to the hardware stores. “The Hardware Store Check” (8:15 p.m.) opens the “ORF III Theme Monday” on April 29th. The new production tests, among other things, cordless screwdrivers, lawn mowers, boards, floorboards and slats and examines the question of whether more expensive products are automatically better.
Obi is one of the largest hardware store chains in the country. The “Obi-Check” (9:05 p.m.), shown for the first time on ORF III, checks the price-performance ratio of “Obi”, “Bauhaus” and “Hornbach” as well as online retailers and other competitors. Also new to ORF are the two other documentaries of the themed evening: “The tricks with tools and building materials” (9:55 p.m.) and “A hardware store of all places” (10:45 p.m.).

Health in ORF III: Cortisone therapy and cataracts

This time “MERYN am Montag” (6.45 p.m.) is about the hormone cortisone. When used in the right dose and at the right time, cortisone can be used quickly, efficiently and in most cases without any problems against various diseases – for example as a cream for skin rashes and eczema or as a spray for asthma and hay fever. In high doses, cortisone is mainly used in tablet and syringe form, but numerous side effects can also occur. When do these occur and how can they be prevented? What are the limits of cortisone treatment and why is the hormone so effective? ORF III health expert Siegfried Meryn answers these and other questions together with Ruth Fritsch-Stork, medical director of the Mariahilf Health Center of the ÖGK Vienna.
In a new edition of “Health in Conversation” (4 p.m.) on Saturday, May 4th, Denise Seifert welcomes the senior ophthalmologist at the Confraternität private clinic, Martin Rubey, on the subject of cataracts. The clouding of the lens of the eye is usually an age-related change. Those affected often see blurry, blurry vision or feel blinded. If left untreated, those affected see worse and worse and can even go blind.

Humorous things about Klaus Eckel’s 50s

ORF III congratulates the popular cabaret artist on Klaus Eckel’s 50th birthday on Tuesday, April 30th, with the program “Klaus Eckel – The Best Moments” (8:15 p.m.), which includes numerous highlights from his programs as well as lesser-known treasures from the archive shows. Afterwards, the jubilee “On the Red Chair” (9 p.m.) takes a seat with Bernhard Egger and speaks publicly for the first time about the reasons for his months-long professional withdrawal in 2023, about lost passion, burnout, his newfound insights and the comeback.
Afterwards there will be “Magnificent Hours and Old Hats” (10:05 p.m.) with Otto Schenk.
“Thursday Night” on May 2nd is also dedicated to Klaus Eckels:
The long version of “On the Red Chair” (10.45 p.m.) is followed by “The Long Night of the Cabaret” (12.10 a.m.) with excerpts from the work of Klaus Eckel, Pepi Hopf, Martin Kosch and Thomas Stipsits as well as “THINK with CULTURE” (1.15 p.m.) with exciting insights into the lives of Klaus Eckel and Julia Cencig.

“Land of the Mountains” with Marlies Raich, among others, on the road in Kitzbühel

Before “Thursday Night,” the new “Land of the Mountains” production invites you to “Hiking in the Kitzbühel Alps with Marlies Raich” on May 2nd (8:15 p.m.). Slalom world champion Marlies Raich (formerly Schild) leads through the Kitzbühel Alps and the gentle Tyrolean mountains between the Wilder Kaiser and Kitzbüheler Horn. Afterwards there will be insights into the “mountain farmer’s life: Am Kitzbüheler Horn” (9:05 p.m.).

Red-white-red program bouquet on the national holiday with, among other things, six “zeit.geschichte” premieres

Concentrated Austrian “zeit.geschichte” is on the program on Wednesday, May 1st. From 11.10 a.m. ORF III will show highlights from the series “Success Stories in Red-White-Red”, “Soundtrack Austria”, “Wuchteln, Schmäh, Politsatire” and the production “May 1st and the Dream of World Revolution” (6.30 p.m.) .
The new production “Education for All – History of Adult Education Centers in Austria” starts in the main evening (7:25 p.m.). “Education for all” is also the motto of the committed public educators at the end of the 19th century. They offer courses for men and women of all ages and social backgrounds and thus founded the Austrian adult education center movement.
Afterwards, “zeit.geschichte” presents for the first time five episodes of the newly revised documentary series “How we became. What we are”:
“1945–1960” (8:15 p.m.) shows the beginning of a new Austria and the formative moments that contribute to the emergence of a new national feeling. “1961–1976” (9:10 p.m.) examines Austria after the State Treaty. Due to its neutrality, the republic was largely spared from the Cold War and, as a host country, is a stage for world politics. “1977–1985” (10:05 p.m.) is a time full of upheavals:
A new family law and the “time limit solution” are introduced. The national soccer team has a legendary victory against Germany, Niki Lauda suffers his fatal accident and the Donau-Au is occupied in Hainburg. “1985–1995” (11 p.m.) spans the Waldheim affair and the letter bomber Franz Fuchs through to the fall of the Iron Curtain and the spirit of optimism that followed. “1995-2008” (11:50 p.m.) is all about the European Union and the disasters, scandals and crimes of recent times.

Even more “zeit.geschichte” on Saturday: TV premiere “The Gusen Concentration Camp”

In memory of the liberation of the Mauthausen-Gusen concentration camp, ORF III is showing the new production “The Gusen Concentration Camp – Crimes in the Shadow of Mauthausen” on Saturday, May 4th (8:15 p.m.). Although the Gusen concentration camp was one of 40 subcamps of the Mauthausen concentration camp, the crimes committed there were no less cruel than in the main camp. Of the approximately 70,000 prisoners, more than half died. While the Mauthausen main camp remained as a memorial site after 1945, Gusen was demolished except for a few buildings, the land was parceled out and sold as building sites. This is followed by three “zeit.geschichte” documentaries in the “Mauthausen at the Door” series:
“Vienna’s Forgotten Concentration Camps” (9:05 p.m.), “Death Marches” (9:55 p.m.) and “The Fate of Women” (10:50 p.m.). On the 79th anniversary of the liberation, on Sunday, May 5th, ORF III will broadcast live the international liberation celebration in the Mauthausen concentration camp memorial at 11 a.m.

On Sunday: “Lohengrin” live with a time delay from the Vienna State Opera

As a special highlight, ORF III will broadcast Richard Wagner’s romantic opera “Lohengrin” live with a time delay on Sunday, May 5th (8:15 p.m.) from the Haus am Ring. Under the direction of Christian Thielemann, the performances include David Butt Philip in the title role and Malin Byström as Elsa, while star bass Georg Zeppenfeld sings King Heinrich. Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito are responsible for staging the plot about the mythical swan knight Lohengrin and the Duchess of Brabant. The opera marks a turning point in the composer’s work, and the performance at the Vienna State Opera promises a thrilling opera experience. Before that, Barbara Rett meets the conductor Christian Thielemann for a behind-the-scenes discussion in the tea room of the opera house (8 p.m.).
